Miss any of the first round of practice matches? We’ve got you covered. See all the goalkickers and key stats you need to know from all nine games.

Here’s a look at all the key movers and shakers from the first round of practice matches for the year, courtesy of Champion Data.

Note: Stats now updated to include every match, including Richmond v Geelong, Collingwood v Hawthorn and Sydney v GWS which were played over six periods.

GEELONG v RICHMOND

ON FIRE

Dustin Martin looked back to full fitness and had a big influence as he logged 33 disposals, five marks, four clearances and seven inside 50s for the Tigers.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Richmond premiership defender Noah Balta showed some good signs with his attack on the ball in his new role as a key forward but didn’t hit the scoreboard as he managed just eight disposals and took two marks.

NEW ADDITIONS

Former Adelaide small forward Tyson Stengle caught the eye for the Cats with 14 disposals, six marks and four goals in attack, while draftee Mitch Knevitt logged 11 disposals. For the Tigers, former North Melbourne defender Robbie Tarrant had 10 disposals and took five marks down back, while draftees Tyler Sonsie (18 disposals, five marks, six clearances), Josh Gibcus (eight disposals, five marks) Tom Brown (11 disposals) and Judson Clarke (five disposals) had some nice moments.

WORTH A MENTION…

With Ivan Soldo returning from an ACL injury which saw him miss last season, the Tigers ran with two rucks in Soldo and co-captain Toby Nankervis to good effect. Soldo (eight disposals, two marks, two goals) and Nankervis (15 disposals, six marks, one goal) were both able to find the ball when resting forward and hit the scoreboard.

COLLINGWOOD v HAWTHORN

ON FIRE

Collingwood small forward Jamie Elliott was the standout player on the day, logging 13 disposals, three marks, one clearance and five goals as he eyes a bumper 2022.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Jack Gunston is still not fully fit after missing almost all of last year with a back injury and struggled to impact as he recorded just eight disposals, one mark and one behind in attack for the Hawks.

NEW ADDITIONS

Father-son draftee Nick Daicos slotted in seamlessly to the Magpies’ line-up as he racked up 17 disposals, two clearances and a goal playing a mixture of midfield and forward. Former Western Bulldogs utility Patrick Lipinski was one of Collingwood’s best players in his first game for the club with 17 disposals, three marks, seven clearances and a goal. Former Geelong big man Nathan Kreuger (eight disposals, three marks, two goals) had his moments in attack for the Pies, while rookie draftee Charlie Dean (seven disposals, two marks) impressed at full-back. Hawthorn’s No.7 draft pick last year, Josh Ward was a standout for his side with 15 disposals, three marks and four clearances. Former Collingwood ruckman Max Lynch battled hard to record 19 disposals and 28 hitouts, while No.26 draft pick Connor MacDonald finished with 17 disposals for the Hawks. Rookie draftee Ned Long finished with 20 disposals and one goal.

WORTH A MENTION…

Collingwood big man Mason Cox made headlines for his new prescription goggles, but he also had a bumper day as he recorded 14 disposals, six marks, 15 hitouts, four clearances and kicked three goals in just three quarters.

SYDNEY v GWS

ON FIRE

Lachie Whitfield was lethal off halfback for the Giants, logging 24 kicks, seven handballs, 12 marks and nine rebound 50s as he set up the side’s attack from the back half.

WORK IN PROGRESS

The Giants are without a firm No.1 ruckman entering 2022. Matt Flynn (12 disposals, two marks, 15 hitouts) and Braydon Preuss (six disposals, four marks, 10 hitouts) are likely to both get a run in different matches this year.

NEW ADDITIONS

Former Port Adelaide ruckman-forward Peter Ladhams (10 disposals, four marks, two goals) was solid for Sydney in attack and helping out Tom Hickey in the ruck. Draftees Lachlan Rankin (6 disposals), Angus Sheldrick (six disposals) and Matt Roberts (five disposals) all played as part of an extended squad for the Swans. Finn Callaghan was the best of the Giants’ draftees with 11 disposals and is firmly in the mix for an early-season AFL debut on a wing. Fellow GWS draftees Leek Aleer (six disposals, three marks) and Josh Fahey (five disposals) showed some glimpses, while former West Coast big man Jarrod Brander had seven disposals and kicked two goals up forward.

WORTH A MENTION…

After a rough past couple of years which have not been helped by some injury troubles, Stephen Coniglio caught the eye for the Giants with 30 disposals, six marks and three clearances through the midfield.

ESSENDON v WESTERN BULLDOGS

ON FIRE

Western Bulldogs midfielder Jack Macrae was the top-ranked player on the ground in a dominant performance which saw him rack up 32 disposals, eight marks and four clearances as he sets himself for another big year.

WORK IN PROGRESS

The No. 1 draft pick from 2020, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan managed just two disposals and a single mark for the Bulldogs, raising questions over how much senior football he will play this season.

NEW ADDITIONS

Tex Wanganeen only had four touches for the Bombers but made the most of his opportunities with two goals. Bombers draftees Ben Hobbs (six disposals) and Kaine Baldwin (seven disposals, four marks) did some nice things in their club debuts. Bulldogs mature-age rookie draftee Robbie McComb had nine disposals while Arthur Jones had 10 disposals and three marks.

WORTH A MENTION …

Andrew McGrath attended just one centre bounce for the game as part of a new role that is expected to see him spend a lot more time at halfback this year. Zach Merrett and Dylan Shiel each attended 21 centre bounces and Darcy Parish went to 15, giving some clues as to how the Bombers might set up this year.

CARLTON v ST KILDA

ON FIRE

Adam Cerra was Carlton’s top-ranked player on the ground in his first game in new colours. The former Fremantle midfielder racked up 26 disposals, four marks, four clearances and kicked two goals playing onball.

WORK IN PROGRESS

St Kilda forward-midfielder Jade Gresham did not have his biggest game as he returns from an Achilles injury this year, recording only 11 disposals, one mark and two clearances.

NEW ADDITIONS

Former Kangaroo Tom Campbell assumed the No.1 ruck role on the day for the Saints and had an impact with 24 hit-outs, 16 disposals and a goal. George Hewett slotted straight into Carlton’s onball brigade and had 27 disposals and five clearances.

WORTH A MENTION …

Mitch McGovern was solid in his new role in defence for Carlton, with 14 disposals and four marks, playing alongside other key defenders in Oscar McDonald (nine disposals, six marks) and Jacob Weitering (10 disposals, four marks).

Demons captain Max Gawn was the No. 1 ranked player on the ground, the big ruckman having a big outing with 19 disposals, eight marks, 21 hit-outs, 3 clearances and two goals.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Melbourne key forward Sam Weideman managed only four disposals and one behind from limited game time as he pushes to break into a premiership forward line this year.

NEW ADDITIONS

Former Gold Coast midfielder Hugh Greenwood was in the thick of it for the Kangaroos with 18 disposals and a game-high nine clearances. No. 1 draft pick Jason Horne-Francis had 17 disposals and four clearances, while former Tiger Callum Coleman-Jones had nine disposals and three clearances before coming off the ground with a knee problem. Other Kangaroos draftees Paul Curtis (9 disposals) and Josh Goater (7 disposals) were relatively quiet.

Adam Tomlinson got through his first match back from an ACL and was handy with 14 disposals and six marks.

BRISBANE v ADELAIDE

Jarrod Berry was a standout for the Lions, with the midfielder-forward logging 25 disposals, five marks, five clearances and kicking three goals in the club’s big win.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Adelaide needs forward Darcy Fogarty to step up this year, but he managed just four disposals in a quiet game.

NEW ADDITIONS

Brisbane draftee had 12 disposals in a promising first-up performance but then copped a one-week ban for a dangerous tackle from the AFL’s match review officer. Former Geelong ruckman Darcy Fort (10 disposals, six clearances, 14 hit-outs) split the ruck duties with Oscar McInerney for the Lions. Adelaide No. 6 draft pick Josh Rachele had an eye-catching first game for the Crows with 17 disposals, five marks and three goals. Fellow draftee Jake Soligo (nine disposals, three clearances) had his moments.

WORTH A MENTION …

Former No.1 draft pick Cam Rayner hit the ground running for the Lions in his return from an ACL injury, logging 15 disposals and five marks.

GOLD COAST v PORT ADELAIDE

A few recruiters around the country are kicking themselves that they didn’t snap up Zak Butters earlier than Port Adelaide at pick 12 in the 2018 national draft. The midfielder was best afield with 32 disposals, seven marks and three clearances as he eyes another bumper year.

Former Carlton big man Levi Casboult had a quiet first outing for the Suns with only four disposals and one mark.

NEW ADDITIONS

Former Tiger Mabior Chol shone brightly for the Suns, making the most of his opportunities forward with three goals from his five touches. Draftee Josh Sinn caught the eye for the Power with 13 disposals, three clearances and a goal in his first outing. Former Greater Western Sydney forward Jeremy Finlayson had 10 disposals, four clearances and two behinds for Port Adelaide.

WORTH A MENTION …

A mid-season draftee for the Suns last year, Ned Moyle was the leading ruckman on the ground with nine disposals, three marks, three clearances and 26 hit-outs in the absence of co-captain Jarrod Witts.
