Adelaide will have to wait until next year to learn the fate of its bid for the coveted Brompton Gasworks site as it eyes the land for its new club headquarters.

Adelaide will have to wait until 2022 to learn if it is the preferred bidder for potential new home Brompton Gasworks.

After “targeting” to select a preferred proponent for the 5.8ha site by December 31, Renewal SA has deferred a decision because it has sought clarity from the short-listed parties.

The State Government land agency now expects to make a choice and enter negotiations “early in the New Year”.

Adelaide, which is seeking to move from its West Lakes headquarters, has proposed a housing and commercial development with Melbourne-based Pelligra.

It was one of four bids that progressed to the second stage of the tender process in October.

The Crows lodged their final submission to Renewal SA just over a fortnight ago.

They made a verbal presentation that same week and had been expecting to know before Christmas if they were the preferred candidate.

“We are currently undertaking detailed evaluation of the high-quality submissions received from the short-listed proponents,” a Renewal SA spokesperson said.

“This is a complex site and an important decision.

“We have sought further clarity from the proponents on a number of matters and anticipate making a decision and entering negotiations with our preferred proponent early in the New Year.”

The gasworks site, bordered by Chief St, Second St, Drayton St and the northwestern suburban train line, was sold to the government in 2010.

Adelaide’s consortium and three other property developers were short-listed for a formal request for proposal process to deliver a combination of housing, retail, commercial and recreational spaces.

Charles Sturt Mayor Angela Evans told News Corp the Crows were the only bidder that had approached the council to tell them their intentions for the site.

“It’s clear from the information they’ve shared with us that they’ve given a great deal of attention to providing something that’s going to add value to the community – both the local and wider community,” Evans said.

The Crows could still move from West Lakes to Thebarton Oval, where it would share the venue with the SANFL and Adelaide Footy League.

In May, The Advertiser revealed the club was zeroing on Brompton ahead of Thebarton.

The Federal Government has granted the Crows $15m to relocate from West Lakes.

Earlier this month, Adelaide chairman John Olsen called the search for a new headquarters “an intergenerational project to underpin the club’s future success” in a letter to members.
