AFL live: SuperCoaches scores, news updates from round 11’s Sunday matches

SuperCoaches were waiting for some big scores this round, and they came in an avalanche on Sunday. But one popular star fell flat. Recap all the action and talking points here.

Adelaide finished round 11 with a 99-point demolition of West Coast, joining Melbourne and Hawthorn as Sunday winners.

It was a rollercoaster for SuperCoaches, here are three big takeaways from Sunday’s action.

MAX GOES MASSIVE

Never doubt Max Gawn. Two hours before the bounce the SuperCoach world was sent into panic mode when it emerged Gawn was being taken through his paces for a surprise fitness test on the MCG. And, to be honest, he didn’t look great. But kudos the Melbourne’s medical staff and the big fella himself who turned inone of the great indivudual performances of the season. Matched up against Rowan Marshall – who, let’s remember, had scored over 160 points himself the past two weeks – Gawn was utterly dominant. His final stat line reads: 27 disposals, 10 clearances, eight hitouts to advantage, seven marks, two score assists and a goal. What a player.

DAWSON GOES MASSIVE

The Crows have a serious ruthless streak when they sense an easy kill at Adelaide Oval. Last year they smashed West Coast by 122 points and today it was 99 points, with all the damage done early. Adelaide led 46-2 at quarter-time and Jordon Dawson had 12 touches and two goals to that point. Game over. The SuperCoach system rewards actions when the game is up gor grabs, so Dawson was guaranteed a monster from there, but he added another 20 touches just for good measure.

ZORKO DOES NOT GO MASSIVE

Get on the right side of the SuperCoach scorers early and you can set yourself up for a big score. Fall behind early and it’s almost impossible to catch up. Fresh off scoring 161 against Richmond, Dayne Zorko had a nightmare first term against the Hawks, giving away two free kicks and a 50m penalty to have -4 points to his name at the first change. He staged a brief rally in the third term before giving away his fourth free kick for the day in the final quarter as Hawthorn pulled away for an upset win. The Lions have a bye next week, hopefully Dayne is in a more positive frame of mind after the break.

Recap all of Sunday’s major talking points below.

7:15pm: CROWS WIN BY A LOT

Adelaide falls just short of a 100-point margin as the siren sounds with the ball heading into the forward 50,

But a 99-point win is an absolute shellacking in anyone’s language.

Jordan Dawson was surpreme with 32 touches and two goals.

7:10pm: HARLEY REID IS DOING HARLEY REID THINGS

The main interest here is can the Crows blow out the margin to 100 points – it’s 99 after Chris Burgess goals from a 50m penalty with two minutes left.

But much more fun is watching Harley Reid fend off opponents, boot goals and sit on people’s heads.

6:45pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Harley Reid did his best to make that quarter interesting, booting a goal and fighting with Jordan Dawson as he climbed to 60 SuperCoach points.

Unfortunately, it didn’t really help the overall scoreboard with the Crows holding a whopping 86-point lead at the last change.

6:31pm: DAWSON v REID

Jordan Dawson is public enemy No.1 for West Coast after taking Harley Reid high.

The short scuffle is as close as the Eagles have got to being competitive today.

Adelaide isn’t the type of team to ease up when a huge margin is on offer and the Crows have kicked four goals to nothing in the third term.

Dawson sits on 122 SuperCoach points.

6:09PM: CROWS TACTICAL SUB

Adelaide has taken Jake Soligo out of the game for the second half. Sam Berry is into the contest.

And Jordan Dawson has started the second half in the forward line as the Crows look to manage their key players with this one already in the bag.

6:00PM: DEES DO IT EASY

One hundred and eighty. That’s how many SuperCoach points Max Gawn finished with after being unsure he would play an hour before the bounce. He had 27 touches (18 contested), seven marks, 34 hitouts and a goal to go with 10 clearances as the Dees put the Saints to the sword in the third term.

St Kilda had a few junk time goals which made the final score look far friendlier than it should have, with the Dees demolition of the Saints complete by halfway through the third. Christian Salem finished 32 touches (122 points), Christian Petracca 24 touches and two goals (116), Clayton Oliver had it 24 times (92) and Jack Viney 18, six tackles and 119 points. Minor concerns for the Dees with Harrison Petty subbed out with what Melbourne called precautionary foot awareness.

On the Saints side of the ledger, Jack Steele tonned up with 100 on the dot with 33 touches and 10 marks, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera finished with 30 touches and 118 points while Rowan Marshall struggled with just 73 points.

5:50pm: IT’S HALFTIME IN ADELAIDE

West Coast’s revival was short-lived, with the Crows kicking six goals to three for the second quarter.

Just five disposals and no goals for Jordan Dawson that quarter but he did all the damage early when the game was up for grabs – and the SuperCoach scorers love that.

Jeremy McGovern continues his excellent season and Harley Reid has 30 points at the main break.

5:45pm: DEEMOLITION CONTINUES

Update from the MCG: Steven May has just kicked a goal.

Max King gave away a 50m penalty to the Dees’ full-back and he made no mistake from 30 metres out, with May signing a love heart up to his good mate Jake Lever up in the box. It’s May’s first goal since 2020 and just his third goal in red and blue. Delightful scenes, assuming you’re not a Saints fan.

Oh, and also Max Gawn has crossed 160 SuperCoach points. You’d think with 10 minutes left the big 200 is off the cards, but he’s still going big.

5:30pm: HERE COME THE EAGLES

That might be pushing it but West Coast is on the board at least with goals to Jamie Cripps and Jack Williams to start the second quarter.

Unfortunately Adelaide has answered with a Jake Soligo major.

He’s having another great game and moves to 47 SuperCoach points.

5:20pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME AT DEES v SAINTS

The Demons are a whopping 41 points up over the Saints at the MCG at the last change.

Melbourne put the foot down that quarter with a 6.1 to 1.2 term. It’s very bleak for Saints fans, with not a lot of hope and seemingly an inability to go inside 50 without a Dee intercepting it.

Max Gawn is on 140 SuperCoach points with a quarter to play, with mid-price POD Christian Salem on 96. Clayton Oliver is on 70 and Petracca 73, while Jack Steele is on 70 and popular rookie Darcy Wilson on 59. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is on 85.

5:15pm: QUARTER-TIME AT CROWS V EAGLES

Can Adelaide match its result against the Eagles in round 13 last year when the Crows won by 122 points?

They lead 7.4 (46) to 0.2 (2) at the first change today.

Jordan Dawson was unbelievable in the first term with 12 disposals and two goals.

Harley Reid has 18 points.

5:08pm: DEES KICK AWAY

The Dees have turned the jets on at the MCG, with four goals in a row to put the Saints to bed just as they were beginning to look threatening.

Gawn, van Rooten, Neal-Bullen and Langdon have combined for the Dees to have four goals from six kicks, and the Saints’ next thrust has been blocked by a heroic Jake Bowey.

In the time it took me to type that after the Langdon goal, Tom Sparrow has lined up and hit the post from 20m out. As Luke Darcy’s said on the Channel 7 commentary, it’s starting to unravel at the MCG for St Kilda.

5:02PM: THIS IS GETTING UGLY

We haven’t got to quarter-time yet and Adelaide leads 44-2.

Oh boy.

4:56PM: DAWSON ON FIRE

Jordan Dawson is off to a flyer against the Eagles, and so are the Crows.

The captain has 42 SuperCoach points and the Crows lead 32-1 halfway through the first term.

This looks more like some of Adelaide’s massive wins against the Eagles in recent years than the team that upset Melbourne last weekend.

Harley Reid has seven SuperCoach points.

4:55PM: GAWN ON FIRE

Just when you thought he’d done it all, Max Gawn goes one further. Gawn’s out-marked Rowan just outside the goalsquare and slotted it from 15 metres. He’s up to a whopping 116 points halfway through the third quarter. The Dees are playing far better than their 17-point margin would suggest, the Saints seem unable to get it forward with any confidence.

4:44PM: EAGLES v CROWS IS LIVE

The last game of the round is underway at Adelaide Oval with Lachie Sholl opening the scoring for the Crows.

Harley Reid is lining up against Jordan Dawson in the centre square.

There were no late changes with Sam Berry (Adelaide) and Tyrell Dewar (West Coast) starting as the subs.

4:38pm: HALFTIME DEMONS v SAINTS SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Anyone brave enough to captain Max Gawn?

Jack Steele just misses this chart with 47 points aftter a big second quarter that brought the Saints back within striking distance. Popular Saints rookie Darcy Wilson has 36.

Adam Tomlinson is playing the game of his life with 18 disposals in the first half.

4:25pm: CURSE OF THE 160 CLUB

A week is a long time in SuperCoach.

First Luke Jackson followed up his 154 in round 10 with 67 points against Collingwood.

Then Dayne Zorko managed only 66 points against the Hawks after posting 161 last week.

Now the curse has afflicted Rowan Marshall, too.

He came into today’s game in the hottest form with scores of 164 and 169 in his past two games.

Today he is getting schooled in the ruck by Max Gawn and goes into halftime with just five hitouts and three handballs to his name – which addes up to 17 SuperCoach points.

4:22pm: MAN OF STEELE

Put those Jack Steele trade plans on hold.

He steers through his first goal of the day to keep the Saints in touch and move to 39 SuperCoach points.

It was a nice recovery from the Saints after one of the worst misses you’ll see from Jack Higgins – he threw the ball on his left boot from 15m out and managed to kick it about 30m up and 10m backwards.

4:14pm: SAINTS LIFTING

St Kilda is looking much more competitive in the second term and remarkably trails by only 18 points – although they can thank Melbourne’s kicking for goal (4.9) for that.

Jack Steele has six disposals for the second term after managing just four in the opening quarter.

3:54PM: QUARTER-TIME IN DEES V SAINTS

Injury? What injury? Max Gawn is putting on a masterclass in the ruck against Rowan Marshall at the MCG this afternoon.

He’s had three textbook hitouts to advantage of the likes you’d see in an AFL video game, with 13 hitouts for the quarter as well. Tim Watson in special comments was in awe.“It looks like a professional going up against an amateur,” Watson said.

Big Max is on 44 SuperCoach points at quarter time, with Paddy Dow leading the way for the Saints with 30.

Bad news for Jack Steele owners, however, with the Saints skipper unsighted on just six points at the first change.

The Dees have had a stranglehold on the first quarter, aside from one early entry and a Mitchito Owens goal, with Adam Tomlinson sliding straight into Jake Lever’s role with aplomb. It could be another long afternoon at the office for Ross Lyon’s mob.

3:47PM: HAWKS WIN!

Hawthorn fans are enjoying this one.

Jack Gunston boots his fifth after the siren to seal an impressive 25-point win.

Hawthorn has now won its past five games against Brisbane.

3:40PM: HAWKS ARE HOME ... SURELY

Jack Gunston splits the middle with a set shot – that’s his fourth for the day.

The Lions need four goals in four minutes to force a draw.

Since halftime Hawthorn has kicked 5.4 to Brisbane’s 4.10.

3:36PM: LIONS RUNNING OUT OF TIME

Are the Hawks haunted by the final minutes against Port Adelaide last week?

Luke Breust misses a chance to ice the game but the margin here is 18 points with just over five minutes left.

3:30PM: MASSIMO SUPERCOACH TON

Hands up if you traded Massimo D’Ambrosio out of your SuperCoach team.

He bounced back to form with 102 points last week and has cracked three figures again today.

James Sicily leads all scorers with 107 while Jarrod Berry and Lachie Neale have hit 100 for the Lions.

3:24PM: ZORKO OH NO

Dayne Zorko is in the bad books again, giving away a downfield free kick by flattening Jack Ginnivan.

Connor Macdonald makes the Lions pay with a set shot goal to extend the margin to 19 points.

Meanwhile, Hawks sub Luke Breust has taken his tracksuit top off. Young forward Calsher Dear has been subbed off.

3:22PM: DEES v SAINTS IS GO

We’re underway at the MCG, with thousands of SuperCoaches breathing a sigh of relief with Max Gawn out on the ground.

Big Max does have a mattress wrapped around his calf, but also seems to be moving reasonably normally and has five hitouts in three minutes.

Mitchito Owens opens the scoring for the game with a goal from the pocket, only for Jacob van Rooyen to reply thanks to a Gawn hitout down Jack Viney’s throat, with the Dees bull hitting young Roo on the chest.

3:15PM: LIONS, HAWKS ACTIVATE SUBS

Tall forward Brandon Ryan, who kicked the first goal of the game, has been subbed out as Harry Sharp enters the contest for the final term.

3:10PM: THREE QUARTER-TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Dayne Zorko is lifting! After giving away another free kick midway through the quarter he got motoring and now sits on an almost not terrible 51 points with a quarter to go.

2:57PM: MEEK INJURY ALERT

Lloyd Meek has limped off the ground and headed straight down to the Hawthorn rooms.

The ruckman is sitting on 64 SuperCoach points and has been a great value buy in recent weeks.

Hawks sub Luke Breust is warming up on the boundary line.

UPDATE: Meek has been strapped up and returned to the bench and is set to play on.

2:50PM: NEALE CATCHING FIRE

Lachie Neale has come to the bench for a well deserved rest – he’s had six kicks in the first 10 minutes of the third quarter at 100 per cent efficiency, three contested possessions and four inside-50s.

The dual Brownlow medallist has a game-high 21 touches and 84 SuperCoach points.

The Lions are challenging the Hawks, with a Kai Lohmann goal cutting the margin to nine points.

2:27PM: FINAL TEAMS FOR DEES v SAINTS

SuperCoaches can breathe a huge sigh of relief – Max Gawn will play against St Kilda after a late fitness test.

There are no late changes for either team.

Taj Woewodin is Melbourne’s sub while Cooper Sharman will start as the sub for St Kilda.

2:25PM: HALFTIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Hawthorn turning back the clock to SuperCoach 2023 with Will Day and James Sicily topping the shoresheet.

2:10PM: LIONS BACK IN IT?

The momentum has swung here as we close on halftime.

Brisbane turns up the pressure and kicked successive goals through Zac Bailey and Logan Morris.

Will Day is flying on 78 SuperCoach points while Josh Dunkley leads the way for the Lions on 62.

Dayne Zorko update – he’s on 10.

1:50PM: SUPERCOACH ALERT: GAWN IN DOUBT

Max Gawn has been spotted doing what looks very much like a fitness test out on the MCG before this afternoon’s game against St Kilda.

If he doesn’t play it will be a huge blow for more than 98,000 SuperCoaches.

Watch this space!

1:45PM: QUARTER-TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Will Day is a forgotten man in SuperCoach this year but he scored 142 last week and has eight disposals and a goal already in this one.

You won’t see Dayne Zorko on this list because he has five disposals, two frees against and a 50m penalty against for a grand total of -2 SuperCoach points.

1:35PM: GINNIVAN UP TO OLD TRICKS

Jack Ginnivan has his first goal for the day after a high contact free against Dayne Zorko and Lions fans – and Zorko owners in SuperCoach – are up in arms.

He definitely made sure the umpire didn’t miss the tackle at the top of the goalsquare.

Brisbane looked all over the Hawks early but they have kicked the last four goals to skip to a handy early lead.

And Zorko has followed up the free against with a 50m penalty to sit on -4 SuperCoach points.

1:21PM: GUNSTON GETS HAWKS GOING

Another revenge goal ... sort of. Former Lion and former Hawk Jack Gunston gets the Hawks on the board after Brisbane controlled the first half of the first quarter.

That’s Gunston’s fifth goal in his second stint at the Hawks.

1:12PM: RYAN’S REVENGE

We’re away at Marvel Stadium and former Hawk Brandon Ryan has the first goal of the game for the Lions inside the first minute after marking a long ball from Lachie Neale.

12:20PM: FINAL TEAMS FOR HAWKS v LIONS

There are no late changes for the first game on Sunday afternoon.

Luke Breust has become a specialist sub and will start in the role again today. Harry Sharp is Brisbane’s sub.

The other two games today are Melbourne v St Kilda at the MCG and Adelaide v West Coast at Adelaide Oval.

Stay with us for all the action plus SuperCoach scores and analysis.
