AFL clubs reveal their new guernsey numbers for season 2022

An opportunity to wear the number of a club legend will form part of Jamarra Ugle-Hagan’s reset program as he aims to shake off last year’s disappointing debut season.

Former number one draft pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan hopes that a change of number will inspire a change in fortunes in 2022.

Ugle-Hagan, who wore the number 22 jersey in his debut season, will don the number 2 jersey made famous by club legend Robert Murphy next year.

The talented youngster, who endured a disappointing 2021 campaign, only managing five games, pointed to a fresh start and inspiring mentor as the motive behind the change.

“The main thing was I wasn’t happy with last year’s performance,” Ugle-Hagan said.

“I feel like the change in number can be more of a reset.”

“I picked the number as my mentor is Chris Johnson and he wore the number two. He has looked after me while I have been in Melbourne.”

“I’ve always looked up to him.”

The number is synonymous with former club captain Murphy, who played 341 games for the club across 18 seasons and managed 191 goals.

Ugle-Hagan was eager to share the news with Murphy, who was delighted that the exciting forward was inheriting his number.

“I love Bob Murphy,” Ugle-Hagan said.

“I sent him a photo and he was the first to know when I got back to the club. He got around it and loved it, which was good.”

The Bulldogs will face Melbourne in a highly anticipated grand final rematch to kick off their season in round 1.

Shock recruit to wear Roos’ most-famous number

Shock North Melbourne recruit Hugh Greenwood will wear Wayne Carey’s old No.18 in his new football life as a Kangaroo.

The former Sun trained at Arden St for the first time on Monday, joining the likes of No.1 draft pick Jason Horne-Francis and fellow newcomer Callum Coleman-Jones.

North’s first-to-fourth-year players have trained for weeks but the older crew has now resumed, with only Ben Cunnington (testicular cancer), Jed Anderson (Darwin) and Kyron Hayden (Perth) absent.

Gold Coast’s curious decision to risk delisting Greenwood as part of meeting list requirements – with the plan of redrafting him – backfired when the Roos tabled an improved contract offer to him.

The one-time high-level basketballer started his AFL career at Adelaide, but his signing as a delisted free agent with North Melbourne means he is onto his third club.

Greenwood is likely to play up forward and in the midfield for the Kangaroos.

North has allocated all their new jumper numbers, with much-hyped teenager Horne-Francis to don the No.6.

Coleman-Jones (21), Paul Curtis (25), Miller Bergman (27), Josh Goater (31) and son-of-a-gun Jackson Archer (34) are the others.

North claimed the wooden spoon last season, but the signings of Greenwood and Coleman-Jones were indications of the club’s hope to climb the ladder next year.

Cerra following in Judd’s footsteps

- Will Hogan

Prized Carlton recruit Adam Cerra will follow in the footsteps of two-time Brownlow medallist Chris Judd and wear No. 5 on his back next year.

Cerra, who like Judd, crossed over from WA after originally being from Victoria, will look to make an immediate impact to new coach Michael Voss’ midfield.

Promising draftee Jesse Motlop will take over former Blues champ Marc Murphy’s guernsey number when he runs out in the Navy Blue.

Motlop was the Blues only pick in the national draft taken at No. 27 and will wear the No.3 jumper made famous by former AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick who played 150 games and then Murphy who reached the 300-game milestone.

Fellow new recruits George Hewett (Sydney) and Lewis Young (Western Bulldogs) will wear No. 29 and No. 33 respectively.

Hewett will don the same number he wore at his time with the Bloods where he played 120 games.

Jesse Motlop — No.3

Adam Cerra — No.5

Corey Durdin — No.19

George Hewett — No.29

Lewis Young — No.33

Changing of the guard: New Crows take famous numbers

- Matt Turner

Recruit Jordan Dawson will take over retired star Daniel Talia’s guernsey at Adelaide next season.

Dawson wore No. 34 in all 64 of his games with Sydney but was assigned Talia’s long-time jumper, 12, when the Crows revealed the players’ new numbers on Thursday.

Talia donned it in his 200 matches for the club from 2011 until his retirement at the end of this past season.

Others to play more than 100 games in No. 12 for the Crows are Robert Shirley and Simon Tregenza.

Adelaide’s top pick in last week’s national draft, forward/midfielder Josh Rachele, was given No. 8, which became vacant when Jake Kelly moved to Essendon.

Nathan Bassett had sported the number in all of his 210 matches for Adelaide from 1998-2008.

Jake Soligo has been handed David Mackay’s No. 14, while fellow draftee Zac Taylor will be the first player since Jackson Edwards three years ago to wear 19.

Pre-season draftee Luke Nankervis inherits No. 27 from Tom Lynch.

Mid-year selection Patrick Parnell has moved from 51 to 37.

At Geelong, ex-Crow Tyson Stengle will again wear No. 18 next year.

Stengle played in the number at Adelaide and it was also synonymous with his mentor, former Crows and Carlton star turned Cats development coach Eddie Betts.

Geelong’s other new guernsey numbers are: Jonathon Ceglar (15), Mitch Knevitt (10), Toby Conway (6), James Willis (20), Cooper Whyte (11), Ollie Dempsey (28), Flynn Kroeger (25) and Oisin Mullin (34).

Young gun Nick Daicos will wear his dad Peter’s old number, 35, for Collingwood.

Peter played 250 matches for the Magpies in that jumper, including in the 1990 premiership.

It has become club tradition for Collingwood’s top draft pick to receive No. 35.

Daicos was taken fourth overall by the Magpies.

Collingwood has handed ex-Western Bulldog Patrick Lipinski No. 1, former Cat Nathan Kreuger has been given 15, while Oliver Henry (16) and Caleb Poulter (24) have switched digits.

Magpies draftees Arlo Draper (19), Cooper Murley (27), Harvey Harrison (36) and Charlie Dean (43) have also been assigned their numbers.

PORT ROOKIES HONOURED WITH NUMBERS OF GREATS

Port Adelaide’s top pick in this year’s draft will wear former vice-captain Hamish Hartlett’s guernsey number next season.

Victorian halfback Josh Sinn, who was taken 12th overall last week, was assigned No. 8 when the Power revealed its new digits on Wednesday.

Hartlett donned the guernsey from 2010 until his delisting in September.

It had previously been worn by Port Adelaide greats Angelo Congear, Ted Whelan, Brian Cunningham in the SANFL and Shaun Burgoyne at AFL level.

The Power’s second pick this year, North Adelaide midfielder Hugh Jackson, was given Justin Westhoff’s long-time number, 39.

Former GWS forward Jeremy Finlayson has been handed the retired Tom Rockliff’s No. 11, a number previously on the backs of Scott Hodges and Dave Boyd.

Finlayson wore No. 31 at the Giants.

That number instead went to former South Adelaide key defender Sam Skinner, ruckman Dante Visentini was given 38 and ex-North Melbourne midfielder Trent Dumont got 43.

Father-son prospect Jase Burgoyne was assigned No. 36.

His dad, Peter, wore 26 and 7 during his 240-game AFL career for the club.
