The heartbroken family and friends of premiership Eagle Adam Selwood have farewelled the treasured clubman in a private memorial on Wednesday.
Just three months after the tragic loss of Adam’s twin brother Troy, one of football’s most famous families has gathered to mourn for the second time this year.
Selwood, who died suddenly on May 17 aged 41, was farewelled at West Coast’s Lathlain base on Wednesday afternoon. Some of the biggest names in football were in attendance to support the Selwood family and grieve the loss of Adam, an Eagles star, husband and father-of-two.
Several members of West Coast’s 2006 premiership team attended the service, including captain Chris Judd, Ben Cousins, Daniel Kerr, David Wirrpanda, Beau Waters, Chad Fletcher, Michael Braun, Drew Banfield and Sam Butler.
“Through all this it’s just been so obvious that the impact that he’s had on most people that he came in contact with,” Cousins told Channel 7.
“Just a really great bloke.
“We’re going to miss him, and we love him.”
Others in attendance included former teammates Josh Kennedy, Nic Naitanui, Mark LeCras, Fremantle head coach Justin Longmuir, Geelong champion Tom Hawkins and several staff and students from SEDA college where Selwood had recently worked.
Eagles merchandise dotted the crowd. The Selwood family requested a scaled-back service compared to Troy’s funeral that was held at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium in February.
A funeral pamphlet pictured Selwood smiling in a suit and bow tie accompanied by the words “in loving memory of Adam Murray Selwood”.
Tributes have continued to flow for the 187-game Eagle with LeCras taking to social media before the service to declare “If you ever went into battle Sellers would be the first person you would choose to be by your side. One of the best blokes I’ve ever met.”
Naitanui shared the post, which was accompanied by a photo of himself, LeCras, Eric McKenzie, Xavier Ellis and Selwood, writing “the best human.”
Selwood had been due to run the HBF Run for a Reason half-marathon last Sunday in Troy’s memory. Several teammates banded together to finish what he started in support of Perth-based suicide prevention charity zero2hero, with staff in attendance on Wednesday.
Selwood is survived by his wife Fiona and their kids Lenny and Billie.
