South Australians want Adelaide Oval to host this year’s AFL grand final.

In an The Advertiser Facebook poll asking whether the State should be awarded the grand final because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Victoria, 70 per cent of more than 7,500 respondents said ‘yes’ with 30 per cent against the idea.

The SA Government has put its hand up to host the October Big Dance for the first time because of Victoria's coronavirus crisis which is unlikely to see any more AFL games played there this year, including the grand final.

The fact Port Adelaide sits top after 11 rounds has given more credence to SA’s bid.

“If Port stay on top, and I am not a Port supporter, then yes, SA and Port deserve a home game final,’’ Michelle Moebus posted.

Claire Ward echoed her sentiments, saying “whoever finishes on top should get home ground advantage’’.

James Murray said “grand finals should always be played in the state whose team earns the right by winning more games’’.

One fan said it was time the grand final was moved out of Victoria regardless of COVID-19.

“The final should be rotated around the country,’’ said Nerrad Rathband.

“It shouldn’t be monopolised by Victoria, everybody should have the chance to watch a home grand final.’’

Those respondents who voted against Adelaide hosting the grand final suggest it should be held in Queensland, where clubs have this season set up quarantine hubs and most matches have been played, at either the Gabba or Metricon Stadium.

“With Queensland having home base for the season they should get to host it,’’ said Phillipa Searle.

Leonie Kay posted: “I would like to see it here but Queensland deserve it as they have done the heavy lifting to save footy’’.

Brett Evele said SA’s decision not to create AFL hubs, although Hawthorn is poised to make the Barossa Valley its short-term home, should cost it the grand final.

“SA didn’t want to create a hub here, Brisbane welcomed footy in so it would be rude not to let them have it,’’ said Brett Evele.

Western Australia is the other option, with Tristan McGarrity suggesting Perth Stadium is “probably the best alternative’’ to the MCG.
