AFL 2021: Follow the latest list changes and off-season news from Adelaide and Port Adelaide

Daniel Talia has announced his retirement after an injury-riddled end to his career. But there is another reason why he has opted to call time.

Daniel Talia will retire rather than try and continue his AFL career interstate.

The 30-year-old was not offered a new deal by Adelaide, after missing the entirety of this season with a foot injury.

Talia, a two-time All-Australian key defender and Malcolm Blight Medal winner, did get some interest from Victorian clubs.

But after discussing a potential move interstate with family, he has two young children and his wife is from Adelaide, Talia made the call to end his AFL career rather than pursue a lifeline.

“My foot hasn’t improved and after discussions with my family, moving interstate at this point in my career wouldn’t feel quite right,” Talia said in a statement provided to 9 News.

“I’m ready to move on and concentrate on my life after footy and I’d like to thank everyone close to me for their recent support, as well as the amazing community and supporters in South Australia.”

Talia played his 200th and final game for the Crows in the last match of the 2020 season.

On Thursday his manager Liam Pickering said Talia had suffered another setback with his foot and he may need more surgery.

Wingman Paul Seedsman will remain at Adelaide until the end of 2023 after signing a one-year contract extension.

Seedsman, who finished third in the Crows’ best and fairest in 2021, triggered a 12-month deal during the season and added another year to his deal on Friday.

The 29-year-old was named in the 40-man All-Australian squad this past campaign after averaging a career-high 26.1 disposals and 5.7 inside 50s.

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid said Seedsman took his game to a new level this year.

“Off the field he has also impressed with his leadership at training and in meetings and set an example for some of our younger players to follow,” Reid said.

“For Paul to recommit to the club until the end of 2023 is a big boost for us as we look to take momentum into pre-season training and next year.”

Seedsman has played 83 games for the Crows since joining the club from Collingwood at the end of 2015.

Delisted free agent Daniel Talia requires more surgery and will not play in 2022 following his departure from Adelaide.

The veteran ex-Crows defender, who has just turned 30, was not offered a new deal by Adelaide after he missed the entire 2021 season with foot issues.

He appeared certain to find a new AFL home, and spoke to Richmond at the end of this season about extending his 200-game career.

Although, ongoing foot issues coupled with a desire to remain in South Australia means he’ll not set foot on the park next season.

“He won’t be playing next year,” Talia’s manager Liam Pickering said on SEN.

“For one, his family wants to stay in Adelaide as he has two young kids under two and his wife is an Adelaide girl, so he didn’t really want to leave Adelaide.

“He did have a chat with Richmond and I think the Tigers felt the same thing.

“Personally I just think they felt it was going to be hard to get him over anyway.

“And they also had concerns about his foot, which they had every right to have, and they went with Robbie Tarrant, which is fine.

“He’s having troubles with a tendon in his foot and it’s still not much good, so he’s going to have to go back and he might need to have some more surgery so DT won’t be playing next year.”

Meanwhile, forward Mason Cox appears set to remain at Collingwood after the Magpies lost back-up ruckman Max Lynch to Hawthorn.

The American remains without a contract, but his manager Pickering and Collingwood football boss Graham Wright are set to meet on Thursday afternoon to nut out a new deal for 2022.

“We are in conversations with Liam Pickering,” Wright said on Thursday.

“We would like Mason to stay.

“Pickers and I had some conversations late yesterday and we’ll pick that up again today to see where that lands.”

Pickering said he’d had a discussion with Fremantle about Cox in the event that Rory Lobb had left the Dockers.

Although, that failed to materialise.

“If Lynch got to Hawthorn, Mason was a really good chance to stay (at Collingwood) and we knew that,” Pickering said.
