Sundale tower takes shape at Southport: Three offerings remain in the retail precinct

WHAT do a Japanese bar, a Woolworths store and a nail salon all have in common? Each are shops expected to be built at the $400 million Sundale tower.

Meriton and Woolworths have signed a deal to build a new 1200sq m supermarket at the Sundale tower in Southport. The 55-storey Sundale will comprise 551 residential and serviced apartments accompanied by12 supporting shops. The supermarket is due for completion in 2016.

RETAIL tenancies at Meriton’s new $400 million Sundale tower are expected to fill the gap left by the closure of the original Sundale Shopping Centre in 1990.

The new retail precinct on the ground floor of the final tower in the Brighton on Broadwater project at Southport is fast taking shape, with just three tenancies still available.

Once complete, the mixed-used development on Brighton Pde will feature 13 stores, including Woolworths.

Meriton declined to detail the shops that would be included but confirmed nine stores had been leased, including a Thai restaurant, chemist, medical centre, bottle shop, nail and beauty salon and Japanese beer bar.

A spokesman for Meriton said the developer was hoping to secure a “first-class food and beverage operator” for a first-floor 470sq m shop, which has a balcony with views of the Broadwater.

Southport Councillor Dawn Crichlow said there were also plans for a daycare centre to be built on the southern side of the site, above the car park.

“With 3000 people with immediate vicinity of the new Sundale tower there is a need for neighbourhood shopping where people can do their shopping without needing to get in their cars,” she said.
