Gold Coast housing prices skyrocket

A $2bn, four-tower mega project which will transform central Mermaid Beach has been given the green light.

Aniko Group says it will take its project, The Landmark, to the market in early 2024, with. construction set to begin by year’s end after the Gold Coast City Council approved the towers.

It is earmarked for a 1.3ha site on the corner of Seaview Ave and Gold Coast Highway next to Pacific Fair.

Aniko Group head George Mastrocostas said the project would feature three residential towers of 25,30 and 40-storeys respectively, along with a 53-level supertower which would include “a mix of hotel suites and private hotel branded residences”.

The Landmark, designed by award-winning firm Plus Architecture, will deliver a collection of 821 residences, over 10,000 sqm of A-grade commercial office and medical space and a vibrant new casual fine dining and beverage precinct on the ground floor,” he said.

“A key component of The Landmark project will be the dedicated ground-floor dining precinct that will offer world-class waterfront fine dining adjacent to Pacific Fair.

“This will create a new must-visit location for Mermaid Beach that further enhances the existing lifestyle and dining facilities in nearby central Broadbeach,”

The approval comes despite the objections of some Mermaid Beach residents who argued the development would dramatically alter the suburb’s lifestyle.

“I’ve been living here for two years now and what I love is the quiet suburb, but with the construction, you can’t get any peace,” Macarena Balbis, 26, said in late 2022 when the project was proposed.

“The suburb is perfect as it is, what I enjoy is the nature, being able to see the beach and this area is already convenient – I really don’t want high rise buildings because then it ruins the beautiful nature – it’s so sad.”
