Plans have been unveiled to transform a giant site at Mudgeeraba into a permanent farmers market and education hub.

The proposed Raba Urban Farm, put forward by Stevyn Tonta, will be created on a 78,304sq m site Somerset Drive site near Firth Park and will see it transformed into “an educational and community type space that will encourage environmental sustainability, quality of life, community involvement through events, markets and educational workshops”.

A development application was lodged with the Gold Coast City Council in February, which will be assessed by the planning committee following this month’s election.

It will allow the existing farm and facilities to be expanded into a permanent presence.

Mr Tonta said there would be “a strong focus on local indigenous practices and land regeneration and conservation”, with plans for community gardens, and both weekly and monthly market events.

“This has been a vision for 20 years but we have been working on it for the past three years,” he said.

“This is about creating a space for people to return to country, learn about the land, produce and integrate cultural experiences, working with First Nations people.

“The philosophy is around the idea that if you look after country, country will look after you and that it will bring people together.

“We are working with school and disadvantaged youth and look to create a space for community and future generations to be able to take part in regenerating and learning about its importance.”

According to documents lodged with council, the market will allow both produce and local crafts and merchandise to be sold.

The monthly market is expected to have room for 50 stalls.

The development will be completed in two stages and will feature a carpark, bush tucker zone, community gardens and an orchard.

“The current use of the lot is being under-utilised and has remained vacant by the owner for many years, “a planning report lodged with the council reads.

“The intention of the application is to create a community focused space that specifically incorporates active hands-on regeneration and environmental sustainability that is inclusively community minded.”

Area councillor Glenn Tozer sand Mr Tonta’s work in the community was commendable but warned council would carefully assess the project.

“Raba Urban Farm has become a loved destination for locals who enjoy permaculture and gardening. Stevyn Tonta, who runs the Raba community group, was even acknowledged recently for his volunteering at the Mudgeeraba Show Society’s Division 9 Community Hero Awards,” he said.

“However, the market uses and related event activity do need to be assessed by planning officers so they can be managed appropriately and consideration can be given to traffic safety, parking and noise impacts of gatherings.

“I’m hoping there can be some innovative and sensible solutions provided for the possible flood impact and some suitable plans about gatherings that can see Raba Urban Farm operate lawfully and for the community benefit in Mudgeeraba and the Hinterland.

“It’s important that the planning application runs its course so the public can have their say and officers can ensure a safe and compliant site for locals who gather and volunteer there.”
