Billionaire Harry Triguboff has unveiled plans to build a giant supertower with room for more than 1000 people in central Surfers Paradise
The 74-storey mega development, known as Shore, will front The Esplanade, Ocean Ave and Surfers Paradise Boulevard and will have 519 units, plus retail, restaurant and cafe offerings.
It will replace three unit towers – the Monaco, The Shore and The Dolphin, as well as the Pit Stop building, which includes both a news agency and bottle shop, across a 3460sq m site.
The company, led by the 91-year-old “High-Rise Harry”, is pitching the project to the Gold Coast City Council as transformative for the beachfront area.
“The proposed development seizes the opportunity to deliver a mixed-use environment promoting highly efficient use of the subject site, creating active frontages to The Esplanade, Ocean Ave and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, through ground level tenancies planned to accommodate food and drink outlets with outdoor dining spaces engaging with street life,” Meriton said in a report to the council.
“The proposed development promises to deliver a transformational mix of land use activities supporting residential growth in the form of high-rise towers consistent with the character that is emerging throughout this northern precinct of Surfers Paradise, while contributing positively to advancing the city skyline and promoting the unique and interesting street life
“The proposed development provides further benefits in terms of supporting the maturing of the Gold Coast to a world-class city, delivering a highly desirable living environment where residents will benefit from ease of access to the famous Gold Coast beaches, shopping, dining and entertainment precincts of Surfers Paradise, and the Gold Coast light rail network, supporting sustainable travel patterns and reducing reliance on private motor vehicle movements.”
Meriton lodged its plans for the project with the council late on Wednesday.
Mr Triguboff bought the site in late 2023 for $67.5m
He has spent more than $235m on Surfers land since 2016, with $177m of that since mid-2021.
The sale, brokered by Canford Property Group, was the result of 15 months of work to amalgamate the multiple parcels into a single
Among those who sold in the deal was ASF Group director David Fang who had owned his portion since 2018.
Canford boss Roland Evans said the project would be transformative for the suburb.
“It is a unique three-street facing site on the beachfront which is very rare, especially in that size,” he said.
“It took us some 15 months to amalgamate that site for Meriton and I am looking forward to seeing that new development it comes to fruition.”
Shore will be Meriton’s fourth Surfers Paradise project to be built in the past five years.
The already completed 76-storey Ocean sits on a nearby site also fronting The Esplanade and Surfers Paradise boulevard.
Meanwhile, construction is already underway on his two-tower Cypress development which will have room for more than 2500 people across the supertowers of 91 and 76 storeys respectively.
Also under construction on the Surfers Paradise stretch of The Esplanade is Meriton’s Iconica, believed to be worth almost $1bn, which will feature two towers of 78 and 53-storeys respectively and will deliver a further 627 dwellings, possibly accommodating more than 1200 people.
The prominent Iconica location, long held and undeveloped by Singapore-based builder Banyan Tree, was previously home to the Bahia and Beach Lodge towers, which have since been demolished.
