A proposed $500m redevelopment and expansion of Marina Mirage has been given the green light.

The project, put forward by Makris Group will include a boutique hotel, waterfront residences, and supercharged retail and dining.

The project went before the Gold Coast City Council’s planning committee on Thursday where city leaders voted to approve the redevelopment.

Makris Group founder Con Makris said the development will create more than 500 construction jobs and be built by 2027.

“Marina Mirage is unique to Australia’s east coast and is the most prominent parcel of land on the Spit,” he said.

“Our proposed redevelopment embodies a long term and responsible strategy to deliver a sustainable asset that benefit both present and future generations, “

Mr Makris said it was their goal to incorporate the existing Marina Mirage shopping centre with a vision to revitalise the area into a “ecological tourism, recreation and leisure destination”.

He said the Marina Mirage redevelopment would have an “enhanced public area, a subtle design palate and low-rise form, ensuring the striking marina landscape remains central to the precinct”.

Mr Makris said he was in the “final stages” of an agreement with “one of the world’s largest boutique hotel brands” to operate the resort, which will have more than 110 hotel rooms.

Residential units will also be included in the complex, which will have more restaurants.

The company is in early discussions with Hutchinson Builders to construct the project.

Makris Group CEO Jason Makris said over the next few months they would be finalising the vision for Marina Mirage.

“As we approach this milestone, Marina Mirage proudly celebrates 35 years of providing award-winning dining and boutique shopping,” he said.
