PropTrack was expecting 1150 auctions across Victoria this week after the state recorded a 53 per cent clearance rate from 519 available results last week, with the King’s Birthday public holiday on Monday.

PropTrack senior economist Paul Ryan said Melbourne’s auction numbers for this week were 33 per cent higher than the same time last year.

“This strong activity bucks the usual June trend for slower activity in winter, with Sydney and Melbourne in particular continuing to register robust market activity throughout 2024,” Mr Ryan said.

AUCTION REPLAYS AND RESULTS

“Auction clearance rates remain solid, despite higher selling volumes, and prices continue to increase – with May registering the 17th consecutive month of national price growth.”

Former tennis world no. 1 Ash Barty’s coach Craig Tyzzer and his wife Sue are over the moon following the sale of their Mt Waverley house.

The couple put their four-bedroom home at 16 Bizley St up for sale with plans to move interstate for work and to be closer to family.

The 2019 Women’s Tennis Association’s Coach of the Year, Tyzzer coached Barty from 2016 until her 2022 retirement, and also ex-world no. 38 Andrew Ilie.

Tyzzer and Sue have lived at the residence, along with their four daughters – some of whom have now grown up and moved out – for more than 20 years.

Buxton Mt Waverley managing director Steve Hatzi said three bidders participated in the auction, as a crowd of about 200 people watched on.

A family with a young child purchased the home for more than $2m.

“The owners are rapt and tearful,” Mr Hatzi said.

He said the property had been popular with families during the sales campaign.

The unexpected auction result for a house in Gladstone Park, near Tullamarine, sparked tears.

Ray White Gladstone Park director Malek Younan said four bidders battled for the four-bedroom house at 3 Fiona Court which the owners bought from him about 11 months ago.

Mr Younan said they had renovated the kitchen and laid new floorboards but decided to move closer to Melbourne’s CBD.

“The first bid was $820,000 and the reserve was $860,000,” he said.

“It ended up selling for $1.005m.”

This made the double-storey home, originally built in the 1970s, Gladstone Park’s second-most expensive house, behind 14 Barclay Close which sold for $1.01m in 2023, also through Ray White.

Mr Younan said one of the owners had tears in his eyes following the auction.

“There were four main bidders, then three and then two who just kept pushing up the price,” he said.

The buyers were a couple who had been looking since the year started.

“It’s a 47-year-old house in the northern suburbs, in Gladstone Park, it’s a massive result,” Mr Younan added.

A Nunawading house’s auction got off to a slow start after the first $900,000 bid.

Bidders offered $925,000, $900,500 and $975,000 before a gap of several minutes which eventually saw a woman in the crowd bid $1000.

The auctioneer declined the sum, telling her, “You’ll pay your conveyancer more.”

Another bidder eventually put forward $980,000 and the action heated up, as the residence at 10 Tasman Ave was announced on the market at $1.11m with three buyers competing for the keys.

When a $500 bid was put on the table, the auctioneer told the bidder: “I’ve seen letterboxes more expensive than that.”

But he accepted further $500 and $1000 bids, with the three-bedroom house selling soon afterwards.

McGrath’s James Lewis said about 20 groups looked through the home last Saturday, including families with children, couples and even buyers who live a couple of streets away.

Mr Lewis said the street had “a great community feel” and the residents hosted annual Christmas and Halloween events.

“It was a great result, it was listed for $900,000-$999,000 and sold for $1.26m,” he said.

“The buyers were young couple aged in their 20s.”

A three-bedroom house at 26 Gillingham St, Preston, smashed expectations when it went under the hammer.

The home was quickly announced on the market at the $1.39m mark after being advertised with a $1.2m-$1.3m asking range.

Two main buyers put forward more than 60 bids as they attempted to outdo each other.

Barry Plant director Loretta Khoo said the sales campaign had seen more than 80 people look through the abode.

“It has mainly been couples and families,” she said.

“It has been really popular because it’s in a great location within 1km in any direction, it’s close to two types of public transport, parklands and is in a very family-friendly location.”

Ms Khoo described the house as “neat and tidy” but needing “a bit of work”.

This did not put off bidders with the property selling for $1.63m, more than $300,000 above the expected range’s upper end.

Seven bidders tried to secure a two-bedroom apartment in Melbourne’s southeast at a Thursday auction.

The home at 12/10 St Huberts Road, Carnegie, was listed by Ray White Carnegie’s Tom Grieve and Aarun Tong.

Mr Grieve said that while 10 buyers registered for the auction, seven ended up taking part.

“We had around 90 inspections for the property with it selling for $567,000,” he said.

The abode was listed with $435,000-$475,000 price expectations but fierce competition between bidders drove the final sold value to a higher-than-expected sum.

“The buyer was a first-home buyer, throughout the campaign we probably only had three groups who were investors looking at the property,” Mr Grieve said.

Non-bank lender Latitude Financial Services’ chief executive and managing director Robert Belan’s house in Malvern East went under the hammer on Tuesday.

Mr Belan took up his role at the Melbourne-based company after ex-Australia Post boss Ahmed Fahour departed from the position in April last year.

The previous month, while Mr Fahour still helmed the business, hackers stole the personal data of more than 14 million customers.

In 2023, Latitude reported a $158.5m net loss and a $657.6m total operating income, the profit leftover after deducting expenses such wages and depreciation.

Jellis Craig Stonnington director Nathan Waterson said two bidders competed for the property listed with a $6.4m-$6.8m asking range.

Mr Waterson declined to comment on the sold price but industry sources indicated the five-bedroom residence fetched more than $7m.

The location in a tree-lined street next to the Hedgeley Dene Gardens was a big drawcard for the families who inspected the property during its sales campaign, Mr Waterson said.

“It’s a beautiful Edwardian house set on more than 1200sq m with a lovely garden and pool it’s an enchanting family home,” he added.

The buyers are a family relocating from interstate.
