The Dunes

If you’re talking about beachfront living, you can’t get much closer than this. The Dunes is one of only eight absolute beachfront homes in Currumbin and was architecturally designed to blend into the dunes among which it is nestled. Made of raw ironbark and timber, it is intended to reflect the concept of a piece of driftwood washed up on the beach. Open the back door and you will have the golden sands of Currumbin beach sifting through your toes. The property sold last year for $10 million, a record price at the time.

May’s House

3 Burleigh St, Burleigh Heads

It may not be right on the sand, but this traditional and original beach house in the sought-after suburb of Burleigh Heads is the epitome of beachside living, including having the obligatory surfboards hanging on the wall. The historic family Queenslander, moments from James Street and the beachfront, was built in 1933 and while the landmark property’s prime location has made it a target for ambitious developers over the years, previous owners have fought off attempts to develop the block. It sold in 2021 for $2.181 million.

For Millionaires’ Row in Mermaid Beach you could say this is a relatively modest home compared with some of the others along Hedges Avenue, yet it remains one of the most admired for its luxury coastal beach house aesthetics. The home, which was last sold in 2018 for $12 million, was crafted with the highest-quality materials and finishings – and it shows. Infused with natural sunlight, the house has 20m of beach frontage and backs directly on to the sand at Mermaid Beach. Visitors don’t have to worry about scrambling to get a park on the beachfront because the house accommodates eight cars in its basement garage.

Nestled among the gum tress in Koala Park, the natural reserve precinct of Burleigh headland, is this modern and sophisticated beach house, which took out the Residential Design of the Year for 2021 at the BDAA Design Awards. It was sold for a suburb record price of $4.31 million, surpassing that paid last year by Lleyton and Bec Hewitt for The Palms, dubbed the most photographed home in Australia. The buyers bought it sight-unseen, cash unconditional, within hours of the property hitting the market. Tallebudgera Creek, with ocean access, is within walking distance along the national park boardwalk.

It’s no surprise that the pink facade and quirky name of this beach home have made it renowned throughout the Main Beach. Inspired by the famous Beverly Hills Hotel, the Main Beach Bungalow is unlike any other property on the Gold Coast, with its 25m lagoon-shaped pool and adjoining cabana, entertainer’s kitchen and five car parking spaces all on a large 1062sq m block. It was last sold in 2020 for $4.75 million – although it is not directly on the beachfront.

Allure Beach House

1 Northcliffe Terrace, Surfers Paradise

This apartment on one of Surfers Paradise’s most sought-after streets turns the concept of penthouse-style living on its head. Private and secure, the four-bedroom luxury apartment has a private entrance foyer, open-plan living spaces, high ceilings, and marble, stone and timber features. Yet the pièce de résistance has to be the private pool, spa and beachfront garden that leads directly onto the beach. More importantly, it could be yours after it recently hit the market, open to expressions of interest – but you better act fast. These properties don’t hang around for long.

Positioned in the booming southern suburb of Tugun, this home along one of the area’s most prestigious strips has become a Coast icon over the years. The multi-level Hamptons abode is a standout from all the modern coastal mansions stacked side-by-side along the Parade. Yet neighbours, cars and passing pedestrians are of no concern with this home because it sits at the back of huge 1619sq m block fronted by a swathe of lawn. Beyond is 20m of pure beach frontage, making it a worthy addition to the list. It was last sold in 2016 for $4 million, but one would expect the price to have shifted well beyond that since.

OK, OK. This isn’t technically beachfront but becasue the private strip of sand and accompanying palm trees on main river give the impression of being seaside, we thought it worthy of a mention. Plus, it is on what is known as Millionaire’s Row in the elite precinct of Budd’s Beach – with “beach” in its name, who can argue? The tri-level, newly built house incorporates plenty of stone, has high ceilings, a lift, basement car park and impressive infinity-edge pool. The ocean is also only a short stroll away. The house is on the market open to expressions of interest.
