Party drugs, weapons and wads of cash seized in pre-Schoolies blitz
A cocktail of party drugs, weapons and wads of cash totalling more than $70,000 have been seized by detectives in a pre-Schoolies drug blitz.
A pre-Schoolies drug blitz has resulted in 15 people charged on 93 drug and weapons offences ranging from drug trafficking through to counts of supply dangerous drug offences.
Organised Crime Gangs Group detectives seized methylamphetamine, cocaine, cannabis, MDMA tablets, prescription drugs, weapons and over $70,000 in cash after executing eight search warrants across Burleigh Waters, Labrador, Currumbin, Carrara, Mudgeeraba and Mermaid Waters areas over the weekend.
Police allege the drugs were destined to hit the streets during Schoolies on the Gold Coast.
Dubbed Operation Whiskey Beck, it also involved officers conducting over 90 street checks for public order offenders and intoxicated people, and wandings to detect knives and other weapons in the lead up to the annual school leavers celebrations which kicks off at the glitter strip next Saturday, November 22.
A total of 15 people, aged between 21 and 25, were charged with a range of offences, including nine counts of drug trafficking and 18 counts of supply dangerous drug offences, according to police.
Detective Acting Superintendent Craig Bowman said police were sending a clear message to those involved in illegal drug activity.
“You never know who you’re selling to, and if you’re involved you expect law enforcement to come through your door,” he said.
“We remain committed to investigating and targeting criminal networks and associates who threaten the safety and wellbeing of our communities.
“Those involved in organised criminal activity can expect continued police attention.
“The drugs seized were destined for the streets in the lead-up to Schoolies celebrations, with no regard for the impact they could have.
“These substances destroy lives and fund further criminal activity, which is why we will continue to pursue those responsible.”
Next week 15,000 school leavers are expected to descend on Surfers Paradise for the first week of the celebrations.
