Chilling footage shows how New Orleans terrorist Shamsud-Din Jabbar recorded a video of himself cycling up Bourbon Street using Meta smart glasses in the weeks before his horrific attack.
The FBI has released footage that Jabbar recorded while on two separate scouting missions in the French Quarter.
The ISIS-inspired attacker, a former US Army soldier, was wearing the same glasses when he rammed his rented pick-up truck into New Year’s revellers on the famed street, killing 14 people and wounding dozens more.
The FBI said Jabbar, 43, could have killed even more people with IEDs he planted around the packed tourist district, but he was shot dead by police before he could reach the remote detonator.
“We believe that the transmitter would have functioned, and would have worked, but for New Orleans PD putting him down before he could get access to that transmitter and set off the devices,” said Joshua Jackson, Special Agent in Charge for the New Orleans Field Division.
Other footage show Jabbar, who uploaded videos to Meta-owned Facebook minutes before the attack, placing the bombs in plastic coolers.
The attacker pledged allegiance to ISIS and said he wanted to fight a war against nonbelievers, according to the FBI.
FBI New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Lyonel Myrthil outlined Jabbar’s movements before the attack, saying he travelled to New Orleans from his home in Houston, Texas, twice before the attack.
His first visit was on October 30 for at least two days, while his second was on November 10.
The FBI said Jabbar made the cycling video on his first visit using the hands-free glasses, which were developed by US tech giant Meta and are capable of recording or livestreaming.
In a news conference, the 14th victim was confirmed by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as LaTasha Polk.
He said she worked as a nursing assistant and was the mother of a 14-year-old.
