But Meat Loaf did once say he grabbed a “jealous” Prince Andrew and threatened to dunk him over the affections of Sarah ‘Fergie’ Ferguson, telling the royal: “I don’t give a sh*t who you are, you’re goin’ in the moat”.
Tributes began pouring in for Marvin Lee Aday after he died at 74 from a reported battle with Covid, including a renewed appreciation for his confrontation with the Royal family before its scandal-plagued era.
“The Queen hates me,” he said in an interview remembering his appearance in the 1987 game show “It’s a Royal Knockout” when Fergie gave him a little too much “attention”.
The musician and actor become part of Royal lore by joining Fergie’s team on the charity event during his career low-point between the Bat Out of Hell rise to fame in 1977 and his 1993 comeback.
“Fergie wasn’t exactly flirting with me, but she was paying attention to me, and I think Andrew got a little - I could be wrong, I’m just reading into this - I think he got a little jealous ... Anyway, he tried to push me in the water,” he told The Guardian in a 2003 interview.
“He tried to push me in the moat. So I turned around and I grabbed him and he goes, ‘You can’t touch me. I’m royal.’ I said, ‘well you try to push me in the moat, Jack, I don’t give a shit who you are, you’re goin’ in the moat.’”
The one-off event The Duchess of York, Prince Edward, the Duke of York and Princess Anne in support of their different causes. They were joined by celebrities like Meat Loaf and John Travolta, all in costume as minstrels, damsels, knights and squires.
It was broadcast to more than 18 million people and raised more than £1.5 million for charity, but the Queen was reportedly furious it made the royal family look ridiculous.
In retrospect, it was an era before the British monarchy had bigger concerns with a series of scandals throughout the 1990s.
The tumultuous period continues with the Royal family’s split with Prince Harry and Prince Andrew defending allegations of sex abuse, which he strenuously denies.
