The Prime Minister of the UK, Rishi Sunak, has adopted a strict fasting regime described as the “monk diet”.

The diet involves not eating anything for 36 hours straight.

Mr Sunak doesn’t eat anything from 5pm on Sunday night to 5am on Tuesday morning, a source told the Sunday Times newspaper.

Confirming his wellness regime to the BBC Mr Sunak says the strict diet allows him to eat sugary snacks, for which he has a particular weakness.

“I tend to try and do some fasting at the beginning of every week as part of a general balanced lifestyle but everyone will do this differently,” he said.

“It means that I can then indulge myself in all the sugary treats I like for the rest of the week.”

Good Morning Britain presenter called the diet “extradordinary”.

While his co-host Susanna Reid admitted to trying the diet and “wobbling” after 14 hours.

Intermittent fasting can help people lose weight as it allows the body to burn stored body fat.

The most popular forms of intermittent fasting are the 5:2 diet, which involves restricting calories intake to 500 a day for two days, and the 16:8 diet, where calories are only consumed during an eight hour window.

Mr Sunak is also a famous teetotaller and participates in Peloton classes - admitting that he favours one session that is done to Britney Spears’ hits.
