Wearing a white Chanel outfit, Jennifer Lopez delivered a major fashion moment at newly-minted President Joe Biden’s inauguration.
The occasion offered Washington D.C a fashion moment that hasn’t been seen since the Obama era, with Lopez sporting a long Chanel winter coat teamed with a pair of sparkly wide-legged trousers and a ruffled blouse, and a baret – in a subtle nod to her Jenny From The Block era.
The 51-year-old’s Chanel ensemble featured in the luxury label’s fall-winter 2020/21 ready-to-wear collection, the brand said in a statement.
Lady Gaga led the way in a billowing Schiaparelli ball gown and dove-shaped gold pin, which was compared to a costume from The Hunger Games, as she belted out a rendition of the US national anthem.
Gaga’s long-sleeved outfit featured a fitted navy drop-waist bodice with a demure mock neck collar, a look completed with a voluminous scarlet skirt that ensured she kept her COVID-friendly distance.
“My intention is to acknowledge our past, be healing for our present, and passionate for a future where we work together lovingly. I will sing to the hearts of all people who live on this land,” Gaga tweeted ahead of her performance.
Daniel Roseberry, the Schiaparelli designer behind the dress, said in a statement to The New York Times that “as an American living in Paris, this ensemble is a love letter to the country I miss so dearly and to a performer whose artistry I have so long admired.”
Following Gaga’s rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner, Lopez took the stage performing Woody Guthrie’s classic This Land Is Your Land.
Bronx-raised with Puerto Rican roots, Lopez finished with America The Beautiful, adding in a line from the national Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish: “Con libertad y justicia para todos” (”With liberty and justice for all”).
Sporting a white pants suit ensemble with a ruffle collar, Lopez also shouted “Let’s get loud!” during her performance, a nod to her turn-of-the-millennium signature hit.
Garth Brooks, in a black jacket and cowboy hat with baggy blue jeans, sang Amazing Grace. And the youngest inaugural poet ever, Amanda Gorman, wore a sleek canary yellow coat, gold hoop earrings and a bright red headband to recite her moving work The Hill We Climb.
Later in the evening, Oscar-winner Tom Hanks hosted a televised concert, Celebrating America, beamed from outside The Lincoln Memorial, which was opened by Bruce Springsteen and featured Jon Bon Jovi – who sang The Beatles’ Here Comes The Sun via video link from Miami, along with performances from Justin Timberlake, John Legend and The Foo Fighters.
Wearing a white cape, Perry closed the event with her song Firework outside the White House, as pink fireworks lit up the sky and Mr Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris – all wearing masks due to COVID safety precautions – watched on.
Actors Eva Longoria, John Krasinski and Kerry Washington, who were high-profile supporters of Biden during the 2020 election campaign, also appeared in the stirring virtual event, which celebrated American achievements and called for unity.
