‘Democrats will win’: Arnold Schwarzenegger throws shade on Donald Trump

Arnold Schwarzenegger has dissed Donald Trump, saying it’s “sad” the US Republican’s can’t find an “intelligent” person to run for president.

‘Dearth of choices’ in US presidential race

Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that if Donald Trump gets the US Republican nomination for the next presidential race, the Democrats will win.

The former Republican California governor added that it was “sad” that the Republican party was unable to find a “smart, intelligent” person to lead America.

In the interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Schwarzenegger, 75, was talking about the dangers of history repeating itself – with regards to the rise in anti-Semitism – when the journalist asked what he thought of history repeating itself in the White House.

Currently, it looks very possible that the next US elections will have current President Joe Biden going up against former president Donald Trump – again.

“Donald Trump is now the frontrunner to be the nominee of your party, of the Republican party. Does that concern you?” Bash asked.

Schwarzenegger said it didn’t, adding: “Being a frontrunner of one party and letting them dig this hole deeper and deeper is going to make it easier for the Democrats to win.

“It’s sad to see that – that they couldn’t come up with a new talent, with a new face, that is a reasonable, smart, intelligent person that can lead this country in the Republican way.”

When asked if he saw any way that Mr Trump could win a presidential election again, the Hollywood star’s answer was a blunt: “No.”

“He is maybe going to get the Republican nomination,” he said. “Then when it comes down to the actual election, there’s too many people now that have seen what he did as president, that I think when it comes to the majority on election day, I think they will see the difference between one and the other.

“And believe me, I’m not the first one to say, ‘Hey, this is really great to have Biden back as president.’ No. But there’s just no better option, the way it looks right now.”

At the moment, the favourites in the race for the Republican nomination are Mr Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Described by Politico as a type of “Trump Lite”, Mr DeSantis has been positioning himself as a “more effective, less scandalous” version of the former president.

He has yet to officially launch a presidential campaign, but a series of provocative political moves by the 44-year-old – including railing against “wokeness” – have put him in a political spotlight.

Mr Trump’s national lead is anywhere from 20 to 46 percentage points, something he was quick to brag about last week during a rally in New Hampshire where he suggested there was no need to even debate his rivals for the nomination.

But it could be the billionaire’s own legal issues that cause him the most problems in securing the nomination. He is facing an indictment on 34 charges, accusing him of falsifying business records over alleged hush-money payments for porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential race. He is also being sued in a civil lawsuit by former journalist E. Jean Carroll who has accused him of raping her in a store change room in 1996. He has denied her claims.

‘They want to believe election was stolen’

Meanwhile, Schwarzenegger also commented in the CNN interview on the devoted followers Mr Trump has, who still believe the last US election was “stolen”.

“They will buy into it because they want to buy into it,” he said.

“They just want to believe the election was stolen. Because Trump is their man.”

The Republican said there is a growing problem of hatred globally.

“Prejudice and hate go in so many different directions. It’s not if you believe the Trump election was stolen or not – it has nothing to do with Trump.

“All over the world, we have this problem now that there is this hate and this prejudice – and we’re talking about men against women, women against men, black against white, white against black, Americans against immigrants, immigrants against Americans,” he said.

“I just think that we have to defuse that.”
