A woman was flown to Royal Darwin Hospital after she was struck against a fence by a cow while working on a remote station in the Big Rivers region.
The woman in her 20s suffered “serious injuries” to her chest and back as a result, according to a CareFlight spokesperson, who said the incident happened about two weeks ago.
CareFlight said it responded to the incident with the “fixed wing medical team”, including a flight doctor and flight nurse providing treatment on the ground, before flying the woman to RDH in a stable condition.
Flight Nurse Nadine, who was part of the response, acknowledged the support provided by station workers on the ground.
“Thank you to the patient’s colleagues who not only assisted in transporting our crew and equipment to the scene but also helped us safely package the patient for transfer back to the aircraft,” she said in a statement.
CareFlight was unable to reveal the exact location of the incident or the age of the patient due to patient confidentiality.
The Big Rivers region, which covers 340,000km² and consists of three local government areas, is the second largest in the Northern Territory and covers almost 25 per cent of the Territory’s land mass.
CareFlight responds to more than 4500 patients in the Top End of the NT who require fixed wing retrieval each year.
“When injuries happen in isolated locations, fast access to medical care can make all the difference” said Jodie Mills, CareFlight’s NT General Manager.
