WA reaches new daily Covid-19 case record

Western Australia has broken its daily Covid-19 case record with more than 1100 infections reported over the past 24 hours.

McGowan urges residents not to panic, warns of thousands of cases

A new record for the highest number of daily Covid-19 cases has been made in Western Australia, with 1179 new infections reported on Tuesday.

Four of the new cases are related to travel, while 1175 were locally acquired.

With these new infections, the number of active cases across the state has reached 5994.

It was only on Saturday that the previous record of new daily cases was broken when 1105 new infections were reported.

With the increasing number of infections, more Covid-positive patients have been admitted to hospital.

There are now 16 hospitalisations, up from 11 on Monday, but none of them require a ventilator or are in the intensive care unit.

The state will move to Level 2 restrictions as soon as it opens its borders to the rest of the nation on March 3.

Premier Mark McGowan on Monday repeated that he himself hoped the restrictions would only be in place for “one month”.

A review of the restrictions will be undertaken after the four weeks.

“The reality is Western Australia is just heading into the pandemic now,” the premier said.

“We’ve had two years without really having any significant spread of the virus but we have to get through the next month or so and make sure we come out o fit as strong as we have been over the last two years.

“Unfortunately, we’re now getting significant spread of the virus and the modelling shows that by doing this we’ll reduce the hospitalisation pressure, the number of people who get sick and die.

“Hopefully it’s only for one month and we can get through this.”

Under the restrictions, residents will move to a one person per two sqm density rule with a 150 patron limit for indoors or outdoors events like weddings and funerals, at places of worship, fitness centres, entertainment venues, hairdressers, tattoo parlours and beauty services and galleries and museums.

The same density requirements also apply to hospitality venues and nightclubs that can operate with seated service only.

Home gatherings are limited to 10 people while private outdoor gatherings in a public space will be capped at 50 people.

Large scale events at outdoor public venues will be capped at 500 people and masks must be worn.
