A massive 5.8m saltwater crocodile has been filmed “playing with” a bull shark on the Adelaide River.
The footage was taken on July 2 and shows the croc called ‘Dominator’ biting down on a bull shark snack in the river’s muddy waters.
Manager of Adelaide River Cruises John Dealy said he had seen Dominator eat another croc before.
“(The customers) were astounded, they couldn’t believe it,” Mr Dealy said.
“We’ve been observing Dominator for at least 12 years now.
“He’s a big lad who keeps the river under very good control.
“He was playing with the shark – he’s much smarter than you think.
“Dominator just gently picked it up and spat it out.”
It is understood the scaly victim survived the ordeal.
Local crocodile expert Professor Grahame Webb said it was actually common for crocs to take on sharks in Territory waters, and sometimes it is even the other way around.
“I think it is quite common as sharks are abundant in NT waters, and crocs are very adept at sensing and catching anything that comes within jaw striking range,” Professor Webb said.
“There’s long been concern that large sharks may take crocs also but few records.
“Some lacerations on crocs may be shark bites rather than propeller strikes.
“For example large tiger sharks are well established predators on sea turtles in our waters.”
