Spare a thought for the cast of the iconic Australian soap Neighbours who found out that their show had been axed via the UK media early on Friday morning.
By the time the cast had assembled at Neighbours HQ in Melbourne on Friday to be officially informed by Channel 10 that the show was coming to an end after streaming giant Amazon confirmed it would not be renewing its production deal for the show, the horse had well and truly bolted.
Bad news travels fast. It is a tough way to learn that your gig is coming to an end.
Fremantle Australia, the producers of Neighbours, and Amazon informed Ten that the show would cease production in July, with the last episode to air in December.
Neighbours must surely be setting some sort of record for the number of times a soap has been axed. The show was first axed by Channel 7 at the end of 1985. It was saved by Ten and flourished under that arrangement until it was axed in July 2022.
In late 2022 Amazon appeared as the show’s white knight and inked a production partnership with Fremantle Australia and Ten which saw Neighbours resurrected and return to screens in September 2023.
While many are deeply saddened by the show’s latest cancellation, others appreciate just how fortunate fans, cast and crew were to be able to be part of a further two years in the extraordinary history of the beloved soap which was a launching pad for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Guy Pearce and Margot Robbie.
