‘They don’t care’: Mum’s fears after teen boy allegedly shot in her Seaford home

A woman who lives in a home where a boy was allegedly shot — and left fighting for life — says she suspects a group of troubled teens may be involved, while police probe whether his injuries were an accident.

Police are investigating a shooting which seriously injured a teenage boy at a home in Seaford.

A young mother has detailed the traumatic moment she discovered her Seaford home was the scene of an alleged shooting while watching the news from her mother’s house.

Emergency services were called to a property on Glen Alvie St about 4.30pm on Sunday after reports a gun had been fired.

A teenage boy, believed to be aged 16, was found at the home with a gunshot wound.

He was rushed to hospital where he remained in a critical condition on Monday morning.

“I had no idea until I saw it on the news,” the young mum told the Herald Sun on Monday afternoon.

“When I arrived, the street was blocked off on both ends and I couldn’t get to my house.”

The mother of two, who wished to remain anonymous, said she suspected a group of troubled teens was involved in the incident.

“It’s worrying because a lot of them know there’s usually a six-year-old boy living at the house … and they don’t care,” she added.

The woman, who had been renting the Glenalvie St home in Seaford for about 14 months, first accessed the home about midday on Monday following the incident.

She said the house had been trashed and that it appeared the shooting had occurred in the living room.

“I walked inside and saw blood … (and) drugs,” she said.

“There must have been girls there, too, because there’s girls shoes everywhere.”

The woman said she had been staying at her mother’s nearby home with her son at the time of the incident and the Seaford home had been locked.

She added some people known to the family may have been aware of a broken back window through which they could gain entry.

“I think maybe that’s how they’ve gotten inside but I don’t know,” she said.

Police are expected to investigate whether the shooting was the result of misadventure.

The Herald Sun understands an accident is one key line of inquiry in the wounding of the boy.

Any witnesses at the property will be interviewed as part of the inquiry.

They will look into who owned the weapon and whether it was registered.

Ballistics experts are expected to play a role in the investigation.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said she heard screaming at the time of the shooting.

“(I) heard helicopters overhead and someone screaming,” she told the Herald Sun on Monday morning.

Another resident on the street said he was shocked by the shooting.

“It’s horrible what’s happened, and to a teenage boy, too, I can’t believe it,” he said.

A woman who has lived opposite the home for many years said the current family who lived in the home were “lovely” people.

“We have never had any issues with them, no noise complaints or anything like that,” she said.

While the woman and her husband weren’t home on Sunday afternoon, she said the alleged shooting could not be seen or heard in CCTV footage captured from outside their home.

“We couldn’t see or hear anything,” she said.

“Police cordoned off both ends of the street and were here until probably 1am this morning.

“The investigation seemed to be focused inside the home, though.”

She agreed the incident was strange for the residential street, and said her thoughts were with the young boy.

“It’s really unfortunate and I hope he’s OK,” she added.

A Victoria Police statement said: “At this early stage detectives are not actively looking for anyone else in relation to the matter and the investigation is ongoing.”
