Agenda-setting journalism and powerful campaigns have seen the Herald Sun increase its total monthly digital and print audience by more than 230,000 readers over the past year and stand out as the metropolitan newspaper with the biggest growth in the country Monday to Saturday.

The Herald Sun has cemented its dominant position as Victoria’s most influential media brand, again increasing its lead as the masthead read by the most Victorians in digital and print each month.

The latest Roy Morgan monthly figures, released on Monday, show the Herald Sun’s total print and digital audience jumped by 5.8 per cent – or 231,000 readers – to 4.23 million over the 12 months to December.

In the same period, The Age lost 247,000 readers.

The Herald Sun reinforced its title as Australia’s most-read daily newspaper with Monday to Friday print audiences surging by 7.1 per cent to 604,000 in the 12 months to December.

The weekday Herald Sun’s readership is now well over double that of The Age, which lost 10.3 per cent of its readership in the same period.

The Saturday Herald Sun’s readership rose 1.6 per cent in the past year to 633,000, making it the most-read Saturday newspaper in the nation, while the Saturday Age shed 11.6 per cent of its readers to only 381,000.

The Sunday Herald Sun’s audience is 690,000, compared to just 358,000 for the Sunday Age.

The readership growth for weekday and Saturday editions of the Herald Sun over the past year were the best of all major metro and national mastheads in Australia.

The Herald Sun’s digital-only audience has also increased 17 per cent over the past year and digital subscription growth has remained strong.

The impressive results come during a month where the Herald Sun has again broken the biggest stories in Victoria across news and sport.

Scoops include the dumping of Police Commissioner Shane Patton, the blockbuster deal to host NFL games at the MCG and the state government’s move to axe thousands of public servants.

There has also been an overwhelmingly positive response to our special Australia Day liftout celebrating how great our nation is, and the Future Victoria series, which launched on Friday.

PM Anthony Albanese will deliver the keynote address on Wednesday at the Herald Sun’s Future Victoria lunch.

Herald Sun editor Sam Weir said the nation-leading readership results were testament to the talent and passion of the Herald Sun’s world-class newsroom.

“Our team work tirelessly to ensure we deliver the biggest exclusives, most important investigations and the stories that really matter for you,” he said.

“Thank you to our growing audience of loyal readers for placing your trust in the expert team that knows Melbourne and Victoria like no other.”
