Three people are dead and another is fighting for life after a horror day on Victorian roads.

Two were killed in a head-on collision 5km out of Rochester in the state’s north.

A male driver and female passenger were found dead at the scene on the Northern Highway on Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews were able to pull the woman from the car but she succumbed to her ­injuries shortly after.

The female driver of the second vehicle is fighting for life in hospital and two teenage passengers have been assessed for non-life-threatening injuries.

Circumstances surrounding the collision are being investigated by major collision investigation unit detectives.

It comes after a man died in police custody after he fled the scene of a three-car crash in Craigieburn.

Officers responded to ­reports of a car colliding with two other vehicles at the intersection of Craigieburn Rd and Waterview Blvd at 6.30am.

Witnesses told Victoria Police the male driver of the car tried to run from the area before he was taken down by a member of the public and ­arrested.

When the man was eventually taken into police custody he became unresponsive and was treated by paramedics.

He was declared dead at the scene moments later.

It is understood no one else was injured as a result of the crash.

Remnants of the crash laid strewn across the intersection throughout the morning as detectives pored over the scene for much of Friday.

Investigators and members of the Professional Standards Command will investigate the incident, a common practice conducted when a person dies in custody.
