Heroic local, 66, pins accused teenage car thief to ground after crash in Seaford

A man heroically pinned a teenager to the ground and held him down until police arrived after the 16-year-old boy was involved in a crash in an allegedly stolen car. Watch the video.

A 66-year-old man who bravely performed a citizen’s arrest on a teenager accused of crashing a stolen car has described the moment he pinned the teen to the ground.

Two teenagers were driving a stolen Volkswagen Golf through Seaford before they crashed into two parked cars on Centenary Rd in Seaford about 3.20pm on Tuesday.

The boys’ stolen car flipped on its side before one of the pair fled on foot.

The heroic passer-by then heard the other boy “squealing” and rushed over to pin him to the ground.

Dramatic video from the scene shows the boy trying to escape the wreckage before the heroic 66-year-old pins him to the road with his knee.

The other offender, dressed in all black, was filmed running into a nearby driveway.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, held the 16-year-old boy down until police arrived.

“I just knew that if he got up, he’d just bolt, you know? So I thought I’d hold him pinned down. That’s it. So that was the only reason,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

“(The other boy) ran and then I realised the other one’s squealing out the car and I thought I better grab hold of him.

“But I mean, I wasn’t thinking that when I approached the car. I just thought it could be someone stuck in the car.”

Locals said it was extremely lucky no one was injured, given it was so close to school pick-up time.

Police allege the boys’ Volkswagen Golf had been nicked from Rowville on Sunday.

The 16-year-old, who is from the Frankston area, was released pending summons.
