Blazing space junk spotted falling from sky in Bendigo

A large flaming object, believed to be “space junk”, was seen shooting across the sky in central Victoria on the weekend, leaving onlookers stunned.

A large fireball streaking across the sky over central Victoria has been caught on camera by dazzled onlookers.

Witnesses in Bendigo and further north in the Loddon Malle region posted vision to social media of the blazing ball as it streaked across the sky about 9pm on Saturday night.

Speculation abounded online about whether the fireball was space junk or a meteor burning up as it entered the atmosphere.

It is unclear at this stage what the object was and the Australian Space Agency was contacted for more information.

It is one of several similar sightings over the past year, with social media users reporting a mysterious light flying across the Melbourne sky in August last year, followed by a thunderous boom.

In June last year, a “huge” fireball, believed to be space junk, was seen hurtling through the sky, with sightings reported all the way from near Mt Buller down to Brighton.

Associate Professor of Cultural Astronomy at the University of Melbourne Duane Hamacher previously told the Herald Sun there was more space junk, or debris from human-made objects, filling up space.

“We’re filling the space above earth with (space junk) and what goes up will eventually come down,” he said.

“But the rate of natural meteors is pretty constant.”
