A UFO in flight was not something Victorian resident David Makhlout expected to see when he examined his Gold Coast holiday happy snaps.
The close encounter came as part of a growing interest in UFO sightings across the city.
The UFO was spotted on January 21, 2021 at 3.30pm near Sundale Bridge when Mr Makhlout photographed his eight-year-old daughter Kaya, not realising he had captured an image of the object hovering above the Nerang River.
INFLUX OF NEW GOLD COAST UFO SIGHTINGS
``I noticed an object just below the clouds which looks nothing like a small airplane or helicopter,’’ he said at the time.
``However, no fixed-wing aircraft would be permitted to fly so close to buildings and there were no other crafts in sight.
``We never heard or saw anything in the sky while taking the photos or during the hour we spent fishing.’’
GOLD COAST HOME TO NEARLY HALF OF ALL UFO SIGHTINGS
The area the UFO was spotted in is not on any flight paths and no helicopters were known to be nearby at the time.
Reports of sightings to UFO Research Queensland skyrocketed since the Sun published a Varsity Lakes woman’s close encounter of the first kind late last year.
The sighting of a UFO is known as a close encounter of the first kind, while physical evidence is a close encounter of the second kind.
Actual contact with a UFO is a close encounter of the third kind, made famous by the 1977 film of the same name.
