Sage St bridge, Helensvale to reopen early 2025 following rebuild

There’s been a fresh twist in the case of a brand new bridge closed for major construction less than a year after opening. Read when work will be finished.

The fallout from a planning bungle — which saw a new bridge connecting an up-market Gold Coast housing estate demolished months after opening — is almost over for frustrated residents.

A rebuild of the Sage St bridge, which connects The Surrounds luxury housing estate in Helensvale to nearby Millaroo Drive, is finally nearing completion.

“A major milestone was achieved with the installation of 19 deck units, each 23m long,” a Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesman said in a statement.

“This progress marks a significant step towards the bridge’s completion and its expected reopening in early 2025.”

The original bridge, which was built over the train line, had stood idle for a number of years until ‘game-changer’ construction works connecting it to the local road network were completed in May 2023 and it was opened to traffic.

Only five months later, then Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey revealed it would have to be closed “for a period of time” because it wasn’t wide enough to accommodate the Coomera Connector.

Residents were left frustrated and angry when the crossing was closed to traffic in April, after waiting years for the infrastructure to be built.

At the time Bonney MP Sam O’Connor blamed a breakdown in communication between Gold Coast Council and the state government for the bridge and roads having to be “ripped up”.

“The road going into it (bridge) and the whole street that accesses it is brand new,” Mr O’Connor said.

“ … This is just another example of another poor process with the council. They clearly have not been talking with each other properly.

“They (state government) have allowed the council to push ahead with this road. It doesn’t stack up.”

The cost of the new Sage St bridge hasn’t been revealed.
