A young woman has died after being thrown from her car in a horror crash on the Gold Coast stretch of the M1 in the early hours of this morning.

A WOMAN has died after being thrown from her car in a horror crash on the Gold Coast stretch of the M1 in the early hours of this morning.

The 28-year-old, from Wallsend in NSW, was hospitalised in a critical condition after the car she was a passenger in collided into a barrier on the M1 at Tugun at 2.10am.

A 40-year-old male from Richmond in NSW was driving the car, which crashed while travelling northbound, just before the Currumbin exit.

The car rolled several times, with the woman being thrown from the car’s wreckage.

Police, critical care paramedics and the High Acuity Response Unit were called to the scene.

The woman had serious head and chest injuries and was transported Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition before she died some hours later.

The driver was not injured.

The man was arrested in relation to other matters by police and was charged with failing to appear.

He will appear in Southport Magistrate Court tomorrow morning.

Forensic Crash Unit officers are investigating the single vehicle crash.
