THE Gold Coast light rail’s next major milestone will be reached next week as Stage 2 continues to enjoy strong patronage figures.

Major works will begin on Sunday to complete the new pedestrian bridge connecting the Parkwood station to connect with the park and ride station.

The 44m footbridge will run across to the 1000-space carpark and is expected to open in March.

Next week’s works will run from 7pm Sunday to 5am Monday and continue until January 30 and will include the installation of the bridges end modules and elevators.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said there would be temporary changes to traffic conditions.

“We will require 100 and 250 tonne cranes to install the four modules which is why work has been scheduled at night to minimise impacts on motorists and public transport users,” Mr Bailey said.

‘‘These will be the final major works as we prepare for the footbridge to open to the public in March.

‘‘We thank the community for their patience and ask commuters and motorists to allow more time for their journey if they’re planning to travel while works are carried out.’’

During the night works, Smith Street will be closed near Napper Road, light rail services will be suspended on stage 2 between the Gold Coast University Hospital and Helensvale station and replacement buses will instead run.

Diversions will be put in place for motorists.
