TWO men are recovering in hospital after a serious crash closed a Southport road for more than an hour.

The two cars collided on Edmund Rice Drv about 9.50am, trapping one man inside his car.

It is believed a BMW sedan was exiting the car park of the Guardian Angels Child Care Centre when it smashed into another car travelling in a northerly direction along the street.

A man, believed to be in his 30s, was trapped inside a Ford Escape for about 40 minutes.

Firefighters, police and paramedics worked to delicately free the man who suffered chest injuries.

Both men were transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious, but stable, condition.

Edmund Rice Drv was closed in both directions, causing long delays, but reopened about 11am.

Meanwhile about 12pm a man in his 20s was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with a hand injury after a workplace accident at Lahrs Rd at Ormeau.

Workplace Health and Safety are investigating.
