THE M1 is in 25km of horror gridlock this afternoon with both directions jammed from the central Gold Coast down to the border.

The gridlock has lasted for hours since early afternoon — and is still occurring.

A two-car crash in the northbound lanes at Reedy Creek is causing gridlock down to Tugun but it is southbound which is even worse.

Long delays are expected.

Those taking off for a weekend getaway are stuck in a 25km jam from Mudgeeraba to the NSW border.

Police, ambulance and fire services were on scene at the northbound smash, which happened near Exit 85, Reedy Creek at 12.22pm.

There are no road closures but debris has been left scattered across the road.

One patient has been treated for chest and neck injuries.

Northbound traffic from Reedy Creek through to the border is still experiencing long delays.

It is also slow going from Exit 66 at the Smith Street Motorway northbound to Helensvale.
