Gold Coast tops list of Queensland’s worst intersections with Surfers Paradise, Molendinar roads

New data has revealed the Gold Coast has some of the most dangerous intersections in Queensland, with one rated the worst in the state.

TWO Gold Coast intersections have been named in the state’s top three worst crash junctions, with more than 20 people killed or seriously injured in the last three years.

The most serious crashes in Queensland occurred at the intersection of Paradise Island/Clifford St and Remembrance Dr, in Surfers Paradise, according to Department of Transport and Main Roads data.

Nine serious crashes were recorded with 20 people seriously injured or killed between July 2016 and June 2019.

COAST NEEDS ‘BILLIONS’ TO FIX PROBLEM ROADS

Two other Gold Coast streets also made the list of the state’s 22 worst intersections.

Molendinar’s Southport-Nerang Rd and Labrador-Carrara Rd intersection saw eight serious crashes and 14 serious casualties, making it the third worst in the state.

The Scottsdale Dr and Stapley Dr/Bayswater Ave intersection in Varsity Lakes came in 20th place with five serious crashes and eight serious casualties.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said upgrades to the Coast’s transport network would help reduce the carnage.

“We’re seeing a downward trend in lives lost on our roads,” he said.

“Last year Queensland recorded the lowest number of deaths on its roads for more than 20 years, but one death on our roads is still one too many.

“The Palaszczuk Government allocated an extra $205 million over four years, boosting Queensland’s road safety budget to over $900 million.

“That funding by law helps pay for upgrades to fix some of the state’s most dangerous roads and intersections, where our data shows serious crashes are more likely to occur.”

The figures come as peak motoring body RACQ named the worst suburbs on the Coast for insurance claims resulting from traffic accidents.

Southport took out top spot for crashes with 748 claims, with Robina and Helensvale trailing behind with 393 and 306 claims, respectively.

RACQ spokeswoman Lucinda Ross said they had seen several suburbs “stand out” as the worst in the city.

“Unfortunately Southport has topped the list with more than 700 claims for vehicle collisions since 2017, followed by Robina and Helensvale.

“With nearly 3000 claims across just 10 suburbs on the Coast, it’s really important that drivers are taking care at all times.”

A City of Gold Coast spokesperson said council placed a “very high importance on road safety’’, as demonstrated within the Gold Coast Road Safety Plan 2015-2020.

“Our Safety Awareness Devices (SAD) are implemented in areas where motorists often exceed the speed limit. We have a number of SAD’s that move around the city,’’ the spokesperson said.

She said there were more than 80 SAD devices moved around the city which had resulted in 50 per cent of speeding vehicles stopping speeding upon entering a zone with a SAD device.

“The City continues to investigate options for improving safety on our roads, whilst keeping the traffic and public transport moving.”

The Bulletin on Monday launched a campaign calling on residents to name the Gold Coast roads most in need of attention.
