SOME of the Gold Coast’s most notorious road pinch points will be upgraded as part of a $110 million spend on road upgrades from July.
The Gold Coast City Council’s road spend for the next financial year was announced this morning, with Mayor Tom Tate hailing it as a record amount on road upgrades.
Among the projects are designing a proposed fifth lane for Southport’s Sundale Bridge and improving the capacity at the intersection of Waterways Drive and Gold Coast Highway, Main Beach plus upgrades of Stanmore Road at Luscombe to four lanes between Peachey Road and Enkleman Road.

Other road upgrades include:
— Working with developers in the city’s north to deliver $200 million in road upgrades.
— New shared pathways and cycleways across the city
— Maintain, renew and upgrade traffic signals and signage at various intersections including the installation of extra CCTV cameras.
WHAT GOLD COASTERS REALLY THINK OF THE M1
— Identify a preferred solution and develop a concept design to increase capacity across the Nerang River to Isle of Capri by producing an additional bridge and upgrades to the intersection of Via Roma.
— Complete the design for stage 1 of 3 to upgrade Old Coach Road at Reedy Creek south from Kingsmore Boulevard.
Cr Tate said the decisions were made during Monday’s special budget meeting.
“People have spoken and I received more than 1000 responses (to the annual mayoral budget feedback survey) and the overwhelming call was for more investment in all forms of transport solutions,” he said.
“People accept we are a growing city but they also believe investment in transport infrastructure and key improvements is not keeping pace with that growth.

“We can only play our part as a lot of the concern is around the M1 and major M1 interchanges. That is a fight the State and Federal Governments are having and I know people are sick of it.
“To ensure motorists know we are doing absolutely everything we can at a local government level, I have announced this record spend for 2018-19.”
