FRIENDS have rallied behind young Gold Coast man Andrew Guerry who was last night fighting for life after an horrific crash on the M1 at Helensvale.
The 33-year-old suffered a serious head injury and broken arms, ribs, sternum and leg, and a punctured lung after his utility ploughed into the back of a Coles truck parked on the side of the motorway about 2.50am yesterday.
Emergency workers had to cut Mr Guerry from vehicle after the impact pushed it almost entirely under the truck.
It’s understood he underwent surgery yesterday afternoon and he was expected to be put into an induced coma in the intensive care unit.
Friends of Mr Guerry – who call him “Guru” – have posted wellwishes on his wall, with comments saying, “Be strong brother u can fight thru”, “Thinking of you Andrew ... You're a strong guy and I know you will be OK. You have so many people in your life that are sending you all there love and prayers” and “Be strong and fight hard. My love and prayers are with you.”
Acting Inspector Tony Wormald said it was not yet clear what happened but police would be investigating if inattention, fatigue or alcohol were factors.
Insp Wormald said initial investigations also suggested Mr Guerry was not wearing a seatbelt.
Queensland Ambulance Operations supervisor Gavin Fuller said the impact of the collision was so hard parts of the car had snapped off.
“The forces involved were so severe that the steering wheel has actually snapped off and come away from the vehicle,” he said.
“That gives you an idea of the impact.”
While Mr Guerry remains in a critical condition, Mr Fuller said it could have been worse.
“The only thing that saved him, apart from the equipment in the car, is that he hit the truck on a slight angle, so the passenger side of the vehicle has taken the full force,” he said.
“If he had been slightly more square on and ran up the back of the truck, then I think it would be a different story.”
It’s understood Mr Guerry builds motorcross and mountainbike tracks and is well known in the in motorcycling industry.
He had a motorbike in his ute at the time of the accident.
Mr Guerry posted a photo of a Gold Coast beach at 6am on Sunday with the caption, “Time to get busy #goldcoast”.
He was also tagged at Redland Bay on Saturday with a picture of his motorbike and the caption, “Solo ride and dig today.”
Two northbound lanes of the motorway were closed for more than nine hours after the collision, with the forensic crash unit investigating.
