The community will band together this weekend for the annual Carols by Candlelight under the big top tent at Riverway.

Townsville’s newly elected mayor Nick Dametto said it had been a tough year for region but the free and cherished event brought people together.

“We’re expecting 15,000 people to descend here on Riverway for Christmas carols this year,” the mayor said.

“This has been a big year. It’s been a tough year. We’ve had a huge wet season in February this year, which meant a lot of our community were affected.

“But we’re a resilient community, but we’re also a community that loves coming together to celebrate Christmas.

“As the new mayor of Townsville, I look forward to welcoming everybody and also thanking them for supporting me in the by election,” he said.

“The big top tent is up to keep the performers and attendees out of the weather, there will be more than 20 food and drink stalls available, and the other Saint Nick will be flying in to see all the boys and girls and hear their Christmas wishes.

“The show will also be interpreted for our deaf and hard of hearing community members to enjoy.

“Queensland Police will be operating the Kidz ID Alert tent, so I’d really recommend all parents head in and register their kids before the event kicks off to help reunite any lost little ones with their parents.

“This year’s appeal is supporting Northreach Community Care to help local families and individuals in need.”

The free event is at Riverway this Sunday from 5pm-8.30pm with gates open at 4pm. To donate to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal go to the Townsville City Council website.
