Hundreds of workers held up signs and flags as they showed their support for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament during Labour Day celebrations in Townsville.

More than 1500 union members and their families proudly marched along The Strand waving flags and signs as they celebrated the eight-hour work day and rallied for workers rights on Monday.

Labour Day event organiser Kathy Allen, president of the Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) Townsville Branch said this year the Indigenous Voice to Parliament was a big issue for local union members.

“We have to be a voice and ensure that Indigenous people in our communities have that voice and ensure that our community is heard and listened to,” she said.

QCU Acting General Secretary Jacqueline King said unions had thrown their support behind the “Yes” campaign for a Voice to Parliament and Constitutional Recognition for First Nations Peoples because inclusion, reconciliation and social justice were core union business.

“Unions have always fought for social justice; it’s in our DNA,” she said.

“Union members understand the importance of having a voice; they know the best outcomes are achieved when people have a say about the matters that impact them.

“Unions are standing shoulder to shoulder with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in supporting the Voice and sending a clear message that voting yes will move the country forward.”
