Hot, sultry and wet, very wet. That’s the North Queensland weather forecast for the next week and beyond, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

“Pretty much every day right through the next week there’s a chance of showers and thunderstorms,” BOM Senior Meteorologist Harry Clark said on Wednesday.

“It will be hit and miss each day and favour those inland areas … like Charters Towers away from that coastal strip.”

Mr Clark said there was also the chance of severe falls most days in the coming week.

“But once again, that will largely be inland from the coast, for areas west of Townsville rather than Townsville itself.”

He urged North Queenslanders to brace for potential heavy falls, most likely in the afternoons and evenings.

“It’s a bit of a funny one, the forecast doesn’t change a lot for Townsville, pretty much a shower or two each day … pretty much for the foreseeable future to be honest.”

Mr Clark said rainfall would vary widely over North Queensland, as evidenced on Tuesday night with 50mm to 80mm of rain falling in Townsville and only 5mm inland.

“It’s really hit and miss and likely to be the case over the next week as well.”

He said the hot and humid conditions would also persist.

“There’ve been some pretty high minimum temperatures in particular and there’s not really any change in the forecast, so it will continue to be pretty hot and sultry for the next week unfortunately,” he said.

“It’s not overly unusual for this time of year.”

Mr Clark said the likelihood of flooding was minimal.

“There are no specific threats at this points, but obviously keep an eye on the warnings … once again, it’s not overly unusual for this time of year.”

A minor flood watch is currently in place for the Herbert River.
