Townsville Police’s new helicopter has played an instrumental role in the dramatic arrest of an alleged violent domestic abuser.

Queensland Police Service said officers from the Townsville Tactical Crime Squad were called to an address in Garbutt on Tuesday, when a 35-year-old man attempted to escape.

“He was able to be tracked for some time by the helicopter aerial asset before being taken into custody a short distance away.”

A QPS spokesperson said the man had been charged with “multiple serious domestic violence incidents” that allegedly occurred between Tuesday, March 26, and Friday, March 29.

The charges are two counts of assaults occasioning bodily harm, one count of common assault, stealing and wilful damage.

All of the charges are domestic-violence offences.

The man also faces an additional charge of common assault.

The man was remanded in custody and is due to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on Friday, April 5.
