CCTV footage captures Burdell armed robbery

Shocking footage has captured the heart-pounding moment a fearless Townsville homeowner chased off an alleged teenage car thief wielding a knife who allegedly threatened his neighbours.

Burdell resident Dean Smith recounted the harrowing ordeal that unfolded on Sunday just before 11am as he and his wife, along with a visiting friend, was inside their home.

Little did they know, an allegedlystolen white Isuzu MUX pulled up outside.

Police allege a group of youths in the Isuzu entered their property through the open garage door, seizing keys and cash in a handbag before Mr Smith’s neighbours came home and caught them in the act.

“The neighbours came home and then were trying to chase them off,” Mr Smith recounted.

His neighbours then called Mr Smith, alerting him that someone was allegedly trying to steal his car.

With a fierce determination to protect his property, he dashed outside, confronting the alleged thief head-on.

“I have run out in a blaze of glory,” he said.

Despite the alleged knife-wielding youth, Mr Smith chased him back out to the street where the Isuzu MUX was waiting for a quick getaway.

While the chase was going on, police allege another boy managed to steal his white Mazda BT-50 parked in the driveway and fled the scene with the Isuzu MUX.

Thankfully no one was physically injured.

Later that night, police arrested two people at an address in Wulguru in relation to the incident.

A 13-year-old Wulguru boy was charged with five offences, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, armed robbery, entering a dwelling and committing an indictable offence.

A 15-year-old Aitkenvale boy was charged with eight offences, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, armed robbery, possessing tainted property and entering a dwelling with intent at night.

Both youths had their police bail refused and will reappear before Townsville Children’s Court at a later date. Investigations are continuing.
