A struggling single parent from Townsville is seeking financial help after three young athletes, including his son, were selected to represent North Queensland at a national futsal championship.
Mathew Jensen said son Adam, partner’s daughter Scarlett Egan and bestie Isobel Atkins, all 11-year-old students from Good Shepherd Catholic School and members of the Riverway JCU Football Club, had made the NQ side for the National School Futsal Championships in Brisbane in September.
Labelled an “amazing dad” and hard worker by his employers at Australian Specialised Machinery Glass, Mr Jensen, 38, said the catch was raising money for the three children to compete in the futsal carnival, plus two parents to attend.
The competition involves 20 regional teams from throughout Australia.
“It’s a costly endeavour, it’s over $2000 for each child to go there, it’s about $2200 so we are trying to fundraise as much as I can – our target is $8000 to cover all their costs for a trip of a lifetime.”
Mr Jensen said his partner, Isobel’s mother, had been raising money with meat raffles while he had built a fundraising page on the Australian Sports Foundation website to accept tax-free donations directly.
The family had raised just over $1000 of the $8000 goal.
He said he had also designed and printed a flyer with a QR code linking directly to the website that he was handing out whenever he saw an opportunity.
Mr Jensen said working families were doing it tough given the increased costs of living but he wanted to strive to do his best for the kids by helping fund the trip.
