The Riverway Stadium in Kirwan is set to be named after international cricket legend Andrew “Roy” Symonds.

Townsville City Council decided to consider the move when it was raised by Cr Maurie Soars at its recent July meeting.

Cr Soars told the meeting the council should consider the move to commemorate Symonds’ contribution to cricket in the city, nationally and internationally.

“The work he did around here with the juniors and the local cricket scene was beyond compare and he did it without a voice,” Cr Soars said.

“He did not want to take away or distract from the efforts that were being provided.”

Cr Soars said there was a great deal of interest from the community, Townsville cricket and Queensland cricket in naming the stadium after Symonds.

Before proceeding, the council decided to consult on the move.

The former batting all-rounder, aged 46, died in a single vehicle car accident outside Townsville on May 14.

His service in Townsville last month was attended by friends and former teammates including Ian Healy, Allan Border, Brad Hogg, Mark Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Michael Kasprowicz, Jason Gillespie, Jimmy Maher and Darren Lehmann.
