If you’re a Townsville landscaping business you may be in luck with council offering a shockingly high amount to complete works across the city.

Australian economy seeing 'huge skills shortage'

Townsville City Council is offering $43 million worth of mowing and maintenance work to a local business over the next eight years.

The tender for gardening and outdoor work outside the city’s centre is open to local businesses, with mayor Jenny Hill calling on local “gardening, mowing, slashing, weed control and outdoor management businesses” to apply.

“A variety of businesses can tender for the work as it will cover a large footprint of our city’s open-space network,” Cr Hill said.

“Council crews will continue to focus on parks, gardens and road side work in the city whereas this tender will look to cover some of those areas to the north, south and west of the city.

“The contracts will be for up to eight years starting 1 July 2023.”

While the scale of work is substantial, Cr Hill said smaller local businesses could also benefit from the contracts.

“Small businesses with one or two employees up to larger organisations with specialist equipment and experience are encouraged to throw their hats in the ring and tender on the works.”

Business Services and Finance Committee chairwoman Margie Ryder said the focus was firmly on local businesses.

“Council will hold an information session on 25 August at Reid Park to discuss some of the requirements for businesses interested in taking on some of the work,” Cr Ryder said.

“Attendees can learn about the required work, how to submit a tender and ask any questions they may have.

“We want to give local companies the confidence to tender for the works, grow their business, and create more employment opportunities while maintaining our world-class parks and open spaces across the city.

“This is one of the initiatives council has put in place to meet our commitment for 90 per cent of procurement spending to be with local businesses within the next four years.”
