Australia's growing drug crisis

A WOMAN with a history of drug offending has been asked why she seemed in such a rush to be locked up, after police found 3g meth in her home.

In Townsville Magistrates Court, Kelly Anne O’Shea pleaded guilty to charges of possessing dangerous drugs, possess utensils or pipes that had been used, and possess property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

O’Shea told police she had a bong and marijuana in the pantry and some “stuff” on a table during a search of her home on December 21.

Police found 2g weed in a clipseal bag and 3g meth, clipseal bags, a bong, two ice pipes and spoons.

Police prosecutor Cassandra Nitz said O’Shea made “frank” admissions to police, saying she suffered from an ongoing meth addiction.

Ms Nitz said O’Shea had a criminal history of a like nature, and because of the “significant amount” of meth, submitted the offence went beyond a fine.

She submitted a community service order or a wholly suspended jail term may deter O’Shea.

Duty lawyer Sarah Belford told Magistrate Ross Mack that O’Shea was a car detailer, and had fallen into a “deep depression” after her father’s death last year.

Ms Belford said since the bust O’Shea had been referred to Lives Lived Well and wanted to “break the cycle of addiction”.

Mr Mack told O’Shea he was sorry for the loss of her father, but that she had to “move on” with her life and warned her life would be “short” if she was involved with meth.

“ … You could end up in prison … all sorts of unpleasant things (could) happen to you,” he said.

Mr Mack said if O’Shea came back to court on drugs charges she would go to prison.

He asked O’Shea what was her “rush to get to jail” and after saying she didn’t want to end up in jail, Mr Mack told her to stop using meth.

O’Shea was ordered to complete 150 hours community service, and a conviction was recorded.
