Mayor Jenny Hill said after the boxing the focus was shifting to the Supercars.

While the events would be very different to those of previous years because of COVID-19 restrictions, Cr Hill said they would still be blockbusters for Townsville.

“After the devastation caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic, our city is firing on all cylinders once again thanks to these events,” Cr Hill said. “Hoteliers and hospitality providers are reporting strong bookings and patronage from those who were safely able to visit our city for the races.”

Cr Hill said the fight and the Supercars were expected to deliver about $5 million in economic benefit to the city.

“This is why the council works so hard with its partners to bring major events to our city — to provide economic stimulus, support jobs and grow our local economy.,” Cr Hill said
“Those revheads who aren’t able to visit because of COVID restrictions will see just how great our city is on their TVs and devices and we hope they will visit when it is safe.”

Townsville Enterprise tourism and marketing director Lisa Woolfe said events were so important to help build tourism.

“We’re excited to host this special double-header Supercars event in Townsville,” Ms Woolfe said.

“The Supercars is a pinnacle event on our annual calendar and to have two weekends of high-octane action available to locals and Queenslanders, it’s a huge win for our city.

“Major events like the Supercars double-header and recent boxing match have been a welcome addition to the calendar this year and have helped to re-energise our city and give a much-needed boost of optimism to our tourism and hospitality industry.”

While crowd numbers will be significantly lower this year due to COVID restrictions this weekend’s event will be broadcast on Foxtel and 10 HD and streamed on Kayo.

The September 5-6 round will be live and ad-free on Fox Sports and Kayo.
