Residents across Townsville and the Burdekin are being urged to take care on the road as severe storms lash the region this morning, bringing heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning just before 6.30am on Thursday for Townsville, Ayr, Giru, Alva Beach, Woodstock, and Clare, cautioning that storms were likely to continue over the next several hours.
Authorities warned that the intense rainfall could lead to flash flooding, making roads and low-lying areas hazardous.
Emergency services rushed to Oak Valley around 7am after a vehicle was spotted submerged in a creek near Thunderbolt Dr.
Its understood the vehicle was empty and the occupants had managed to get themselves out earlier that morning and left the scene.
As of 7am, the highest rainfall total across Townsville recorded in the last 24 hours was Deeragun with 97 millimetres, Kirwan with 81 millimetres, Kirwan (Sandstone Drive) with 79 millimetres, and Dalrymple Road with 76 millimetres.
