Two heroic police officers have been awarded a Commendation for Brave Conduct after rescuing a trapped driver from a burning vehicle in Townsville.

Senior Constable Anthony Poole and Constable Adam See were among a small group of courageous recipients recently honoured with an Australian Bravery Decoration.

The harrowing incident unfolded on March 16, 2021, when Senior Constable Poole and Constable See were on duty and responded to a welfare check in Mount Stuart at 5pm.

Arriving at the scene, they were met with a chilling sight – a woman trapped and injured in her heavily damaged vehicle, which had been driven off an embankment.

Light smoke was coming from the vehicle, and the engine was still running and could not be turned off.

Senior Constable Poole swiftly cut the woman’s seatbelt, preparing for the worst-case scenario if the vehicle caught fire, while they awaited the arrival of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) for a safe extraction.

However, the situation grew increasingly dire as smoke billowed thick while the front of the vehicle caught fire, threatening to engulf all within.

Unable to wait for QFES, the officers took matters into their own hands and forcibly removed the driver’s door to create more room.

They extracted her from the smouldering wreck, dragging her to safety just moments before the inferno consumed the vehicle entirely.

The pair also recieved Queensland Police Service Bravery Awards in 2022.
